Today marks the birth anniversary of the iconic Gauhar Jaan, a name that echoes through the corridors of Indian music history. Originally named Angelina Yeoward, she hailed from Kolkata and was more than just a singer, she was a trailblazer.
Born on June 26, 1873, she made history as the first Indian artist to record on a gramophone in 1902. Over the span of 1902 to 1920, Gauhar Jaan recorded over 600 songs in more than ten languages, significantly influencing the popularity of Hindustani classical music genres like thumri, dadra, kajri, and tarana. She was also a gifted dancer, her movements as expressive as her melodies.
Gauhar Jaanâs legacy lives on, a timeless treasure in the world of music and dance.
