A day spent well. Humbled to be invited as a special guest on the occasion of 100 years celebration of Ganesh Krida Mandal at Bhavnagar.

During the freedom struggle when Baba Prithvi Singh Azad went underground and with help or Maharaja of Bhavnagar Krishan Kumar Singh Ji set this physical education center and it continues to serve the people of Bhavnagar. It was overwhelming to see associations going back to three generations continue even today with same Passion and vigor. Yuvraj of Bhavnagar Jairaj bhai also took our time to attend this function. Jairaj bhai is a fitness freak and very passionate about traditional methods of physical training.

Baba Prithvi Singh Azad was also in Kala Pani with many Ghadar Party members when his death sentence was converted to life imprisonment in Lahore conspiracy case . He remained on fast for over 5 months on account of atrocities done by British on political prisoners.

Bust of Babaji was proposed at Andaman Cellular Jail but didn't sey the ray of light. We request the government to bring this to closer

Prithvi Singh Azad: The revolutionary who fasted for 5 months against the barbaric treatment of the prisoners in the Cellular Jail

When India was under the clutches of the British rule, many brave men and women found it unacceptable to be humiliated, ill-treated and governed by foreign rulers in their own motherland. Therefore, they decided to fight against the mighty British and made countless sacrifices to secure India’s independence.

As I move ahead with my Facebook series on the freedom fighters who were incarcerated in the cellular jail at Andaman, I would like to share with you the story of one such freedom fighter, Prithvi Singh Azad, who resolved to free India from the British rule and nearly sacrificed his life in doing so.

Born on September 15, 1892, Prithvi Singh Azad came from a family of tillers from Lalru town in Punjab. In the year 1912, Azad moved to the USA to make a living. There, he came in contact with the Indian revolutionaries, who were planning to overthrow the British rule in India. He joined these revolutionaries, who later founded the Ghadar Party and Ghadar movement. The Ghadarites returned to India in large numbers to implement their plan. The Britishers were aware of the intentions of the Ghadarites and arrested many of them upon their arrival in India. Prithvi Singh Azad, however, managed to evade arrest.

He went to his hometown Lalru and started meeting many youngsters and influenced them to join the freedom movement. The British officials got wind of his activities and he was arrested.

In the year 1915 Prithvi Singh Azad was sentenced to death for his involvement in what the British called the 'Lahore Conspiracy Case'. His death sentence was later changed to life imprisonment in the Cellular Jail of Andaman. The infamous Cellular Jail, also called 'Kaala Paani' (Black Waters), was known for the inhumane and barbaric treatment meted out to prisoners there. Not only were the prisoners deprived of proper food or clothes, but they were also made to do physically taxing and back-breaking work which used to leave them totally enervated at the end of the day. This was the harrowing routine that the prisoners had to mechanically undergo for months on end.

As a matter-of-fact, the prison authorities used to deliberately set impossible deadlines and tasks that were beyond human endurance. Some of the tasks included extracting oil, making ropes, pounding coconut husk to produce coir etc. Upon failing to meet impossible deadlines set by the inhuman authorities, the prisoners were abused and given harsh punishments like lashing, flogging and shackling in bar fetters. The jail's living conditions were horrid and the prisoners were kept in small cells. The demoralized prisoners were not allowed to communicate with each other, even as they were isolated, tortured and punished in the most brutal manner by the Jail authorities.

Once, Bhan Singh, an aged prisoner entered into an argument with the Jailer. Following this incident, Bhan Singh was beaten badly and he could not survive for long. Enraged by the inhuman treatment meted out to Bhan Singh, the prisoners went on a strike. Prithvi Singh Azad went on an indefinite hunger strike and refused to even drink water. As days passed, many of Prithvi Singh's fellow prisoners tried to convince him to break the indefinite fast fearing a deteriorating effect on his health. He, however, did not yield.

Veer Savarkar who was also in the Cellular Jail at that time, wrote to him, "You are losing control over your heart and mind, you have become so weak that there is no hope of survival. What is the use of losing your life like this? So leave this hunger strike." Although Prithvi Singh respected Savarkar, he remained firm in continuing with his fast.

Deeply disturbed by what had happened to Bhan Singh, he wanted prisoners to be treated better, even if it meant to give up his life. Such was his determination. After a few days, the Jail authorities started force-feeding him milk using a pipe through his nose, which became an everyday routine.

Days turned into weeks and it was almost five months since he launched the fast. The news of the hunger strike had reached mainland India and there was hope that some action would be taken in the wake of the atrocities perpetrated against the prisoners by the Jail authorities. With his fellow prisoners too joining him in the fast to express their solidarity, Prithvi felt that he would not be able to get over the guilt if something unfortunate happened to them. Therefore, he decided to break the fast after 5 months and 5 days. The fellow prisoners and jail authorities were relieved by his decision. And his five-month long fast did not go in vain as the prisoners received better treatment.
In 1921, he was sent back to mainland India from Andaman, only to be sent to another prison. Being fearless, he twice jumped from running trains to escape imprisonment while being transported from one jail to another.

He wrote in his autobiography about the incident: "When I jumped from a running mail train in 1921, there was no knowing what would happen. Would I meet instant death or live to bring freedom to the country? "

He certainly did survive the dangerous jumps from running trains and lived to see his nation free from foreign rule.

Prithvi Singh Azad had an unshakeable determination and unimaginable strength to take harsh sufferings. He had the courage to take a firm stand against the injustice meted out to fellow prisoners and always believed in placing the higher cause before self.

It is truly unfortunate that very little is known or written about these great men and women of our country, who had dedicated their lives in the service of the motherland and made innumerable sacrifices to free the country from the British yoke.

The saga of sacrifices by these extraordinary men and women must be known to every Indian, especially the younger generation.

Their brave stories must find a place in our history books.

I would also urge citizens, especially youngsters, to visit the Cellular Jail and similar places of historical importance once normalcy is restored and get to know more about our great freedom fighters.

Jai Hind!
