Dr. D Prasath takes over as new Project Coordinator, AICRP on Spices, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode, Kerala.

On the recommendations of the Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board (ASRB), New Delhi, Dr. D Prasath has assumed charge as the Project Coordinator, AICRP on Spices, ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode on May 02, 2023. He is from 1998 batch of ARS (Agriculture Research Service).

A Principal Scientist in Horticulture, Dr. Prasath has 25 years of research experience in horticultural crops genetic resources, breeding, and applied genomics. He did his post-doctoral research at the University of Guelph, Canada under the ‘BOYSCAST Fellowship’. Also, a recipient of Australian Government’s ‘Endeavour Fellowship’ (University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia).

He has released five high yielding varieties in turmeric, cardamom, and ginger and involved in release of another six varieties as collaborator. He identified and registered four unique germplasm accessions in Spices. He was also involved in identification of promising ginger genotypes through mutation and polyploidy breeding. He also commenced a work to identify the basal defense mechanisms against bacterial wilt resistance in ginger through mRNA sequencing, which will be helpful in developing wilt resistant varieties. He has in his credit two technologies for production of quality planting materials in ginger and black pepper.

He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Indian Academy of Horticultural Sciences. He is also the recipient of the prestigious ICAR-Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed award for outstanding research and Young Scientist award, Indian Academy of Horticultural Sciences. He has published 75 peer-reviewed research papers, 25 book chapters, and 2 books.

Dr. R Dinesh takes over as new Director of ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode

On the recommendations of the Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board (ASRB), New Delhi, Dr. R Dinesh assumed charge as the new director of ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode on December 8, 2022. A Principal Scientist in Soil Science, Dr. R Dinesh has over 30 years of research experience. He has made significant contributions in soil fertility, soil biochemistry and soil microbiology of arable soils, soils under tropical forests and mangrove ecosystems. His contribution in the area of plant-microbe interaction and their influence on nutrient cycling and nutrient use efficiency in soils under perennial horticulture has opened up new areas of research. He is the co-inventor of the novel delivery system for agriculturally important microbes through encapsulation (biocapsules), designer micronutrients and PGPR formulations which have been non-exclusively licensed to many private companies for commercialization. Six of these formulations have been awarded with patents. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi and recipient of many awards and has published over 50 high impact research papers.

Prof. K.V. Peter, former Vice Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University, former Director, Indian Institute of Spices Research and former President of the Society, passed away today evening at 5.30 pm. Funeral at 3 pm tomorrow (16th May 2022) at Sacred Heart Latin Church Cemetry, Thrissur. We , the members of the Society, pray that his soul rest in peace. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

JOSAC 2021 DECEMBER ISSUE PUBLISHED
The latest issue of Journal of Spices and Aromatic Crops (Vol 30 No. 2) is just published. There are two review articles and three each research articles and research notes in the latest issue. Kindly recall that the NAAS rating for the journal is 5.11, an all time high.

NAAS RESTORES RATING FOR JOSAC
Journal of Spices and Aromatic Crops (JOSAC) is a peer reviewed, open access journal published by Indian Society for Spices for the past three decades. Ever since it strives to improve its quality, punctuality and readership by embracing the technological advances in the publishing sector. As a result, today it stands tall among the counterparts. Thanks to the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) for restoring the rating for JOSAC and befittingly enhancing it to 5.11.

Symposia are viewed as excellent means of networking, collectivism and setting road map for the coming days. During the pandemic days there is a flurry of online events rich in exchange of ideas involving experts cutting across global barriers. The Tenth International Symposium on Spices (SYMSAC X) was such an event, exemplarily organized by Indian Society of Spices in collaboration with all the key stakeholders in spice sector during 9-12 February 2021.
