CODEPENDENCY vs AUTHENTIC INTIMACY

Codependency: I need you to feel OK or else I'm not ok.

- Authentic Intimacy: I allow you to experience whatever you are experiencing, without needing to change or fix it. You are your own person.

Codependency: I need you to support me and I will guilt you in subtle and not so subtle ways if you don't.

- Authentic Intimacy: I ask for support when I need it from others, not just my partner, and I don't lash out if it's not available in the way I need it.

Codependency: I will blame and shame you for not doing what I want you to do.

- Authentic Intimacy: I accept you as you are while having clear standards around how I will be treated and spoken to.

Codependency: You should know what I need. It's not the same if I have to explain it to you.

- Authentic Intimacy: I communicate openly, and I will never blame you for my lack of courage to share what I want and need.

Codependency: True love is about being loyal no matter what.

- Authentic Intimacy: I have standards and boundaries about how I will be spoken to and treated, and I will clearly express those to you with love.

Codependency: You have a lot of issues, and I'm going to help you. That's where I get my value and worth and sense of being needed.

- Authentic Intimacy: I'm already valuable and worthy. I'm not here to be my partner's therapist, fixer or caretaker.

Codependency: I need you, and you need me.

- Authentic Intimacy: I choose to be with you every day, and you choose to be with me.

Codependency: I can't be without you.

Give freely and it will find its way back to you. 🙂

Though fear is literally an evolutionary gift meant to sharpen your senses and energize you during times of great stress, it can become a barrier that prevents you from fulfilling your potential by causing you to miss out on rewarding, life-changing experiences. During the period before you face your fear, you may have to deal with a barrage of negative thoughts and emotions. Whether your fear is public speaking, taking part in an activity that makes you nervous, or asserting yourself when the odds are against you, walking through it may be equally as difficult. But once you emerge unscathed on the other side, which you will, you will likely wonder why you assumed the worst in the first place. While you spend time worrying about what might happen, it’s good to know that your fear probably won’t happen at all. It may feel like a great weight has been lifted from your shoulders, and you will likely feel a sense of passionate pride. Walking through your fear can mean taking risks and can require both practice and patience. Since it is challenging to act when you are gripped with fear, start small.

Each step you take into fear will strengthen you and help you confront future fears with poise, courage, and confidence. You also will find that when you are willing to stare your fear in the face, the universe will always offer you some form of aid or support. When you see the heights of accomplishment and personal evolution you can attain when you walk through your fears, your faith in yourself will grow, allowing your next step to be easier.

Nitha is a counsellor and has been in consultations with employees of an organisation that has invested in her as support for their stressed out workforce. She works everyday for 5 hours counselling emplyees, and is required to mantain notes and charts on the cases she handles. As protocol demands, these sheets have to be updated immediately after the counsultation and has to be ready for disclosure on demand. Nitha calls me during the last week of 2017 and asks if I could so some transcription work for her. She sends me 5 recordings for transcriptions.

I could see that the language and speed of the speakers were the biggest challenge. What should have taken one hour, took two hours as I replayed and rewound the conversation to make sure the transcriptions remained relevant to the session.

It was a good insight into my client's day, and was happy to be a part of the value she delivers everyday.

Nitha came back from her new year's holiday and received the files that i had transcribed. The relief was apparent and the payment immediate. I love my work!! :)

The client came in with 8 bullet points as a creative brief. Mainly a list of names, designations, and their new roles, and geographies. This was to be crafted into an organisation-wide restructuring announcement.

The client was looking for a well worded, warm toned, congratulatory note that sounded genuine and much in tune with the author's personality and speaking style (if a communication does not reflect your speaking style, it does not translate your emotion and intent, and may leave the reader with a feeling of distrust / flakiness).

After the initial round of appreciative inquiry to understand the "unsaid" reasons for an internal restructuring in a large enterprise, I was struck by the impact this email could have as the new Heads took on existing teams, and possibly larger business targets. This would also mean a lot of disruption and rebuilding of new and efficient matrices.

It is imperative that management is seen as playing an active "believer's" role.

Most often, less is more.
