Gandhiji - The man who strived for self-reliance.

It is the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the man behind India's Swadeshi movement.

Gandhiji pushed for practice of swadeshi, which implied self-reliance and self-sufficiency at the level of the individual, the village and the nation.

With the Swadeshi movement, he believed that the nation’s confidence would receive the boost and that the prosperity could be assured.

“𝑺𝒘𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒉𝒊 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒖𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒔 𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒆.

𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒔, 𝑰 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒎𝒚 𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒃𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑰𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒈𝒈𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒉𝒊, 𝒊𝒇 𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆, 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒖𝒎."

He emphasized swadeshi in the economic field and was a staunch believer that the departure from the principle could lead to poverty for the nation.

Gandhi saw Swadeshi as religious discipline and used it effectively as an instrument to attain freedom for a nation.

India celebrates Engineer's Day on September 15, the birth anniversary of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, popularly called 'Sir MV'. He was India's most prolific civil engineer, author, economist and statesman. Today marks his 159th birth anniversary.

Visvesvaraya is credited with inventing the block system, automated doors that close the water overflows. These automatic barrier water floodgates' were installed for the first time at the Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune in 1903.

The great engineer was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V. He also served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1919. Visvesvaraya is also known as the 'father of Modern Mysore'

He was the architect of the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, one of the biggest dams in India. In 1955, M Visvesvaraya was awarded the Bharat Ratna for his immense contribution to the development of the country.

During the Swadeshi movement in India's freedom struggle, Khadi was termed as the the 'fabric of Independent India'. It was promoted and used majorly as a tool for the freedom struggle by highlighting the importance of using Swadeshi products and embracing self-sustenance. Since then, handlooms were not only an integral part of our Freedom struggle but also became spirit of the Nation – reflecting the rich cultural diversity that this vast nation encompasses.

Apart from the largely popular Swadeshi movement, history tell us that independent Indian weavers who were driven by patriotism and a vision for Swaraj Bharat, spread the idea of freedom through their looms.

There were many examples of weavers from villagers who wove fabrics that communicated their urge to be a part of the freedom movement. Baluchar weavers of Bengal wove saris with the inscription Bande Mataram running parallel to its embroidered borders. The jamdani weavers wove khadi saris with floral motifs representing the colours of the Indian tricolour with the repeated inscription "AMAAR DESH". Weavers of Benaras, the experts of silk, designed skirts brocading motifs of the Indian national flag and the map of an undivided India as Bharat Mata.

Bharat21 has been started to encourage Indian artisans, weavers and other rural craftsman by showcasing their products in a global marketplace.

Wish you all a happy independence day.

August 7, 2020 marks the 6th Annual National Handloom day of India.

Handloom is one of the largest employment providers, accounting for the employment of 43.31 lakh persons. The workers of this sector are chief propagators of traditional excellence in weaving and contribute majorly to the textile industry and economy.

The handloom sector is one of the major symbols of the cultural heritage of India.

Across India, there are 28.2 lakhs handlooms, out of which 25.2 lakhs are in rural areas.

It remains a household based activity as more than 95% of the handlooms are located in weaver households.

73% of the entire workforce in this sector are women, thus leading the way in financial empowerment for rural women.

Here are the different types of handlooms that exist all over the country:

Textile based crafts include techniques like Ajrakh, Shibori, Bandhini and Batik.

There are also hand-block printing techniques like Dabu, Sanganeri, Bagru, Bagh and Kalamkari.

Embroidery techniques include Kashidakari, Zardozi, Suf, Kutchi, Kantha, Chikankari,Phulkari, Lambadi and Chambarumal.

The day is celebrated to honour the presence of the handloom community, and acknowledge their contribution towards India’s socio-economic development.

August 7 was chosen as the date to celebrate weaves of our nation in order to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement.

It was an important landmark in India's freedom struggle and a catalyst that brought about the "be Indian buy Indian" movement. It was started to promote goods produced in India and shun British-made goods

This year, the Indian government has launched a Mobile app called the 'My Handloom Portal' today to help the weavers during this pandemic. Further the Fashion Design Council of India has allocated an amount to buy unsold stocks from weavers in India.

Do you know the origin of Rakshbandhan?!

Mythology suggests that the god of gods, Indra had a part to play in the origin of Raksha Bandhan.
Legend says that in a war waged between the Gods and the Demons, and Lord Indra was about to lose to the Demon King.
In that moment his wife prayed to Lord Vishnu who gave her a holy thread to tie on Lord Indra's wrist. Blessed with its powers, Indra won the war and the thread became his protection against any evil.

Here is some more folklore reveling in sibling love:

God of Death himself:
Lord Yamraj and his sister Yamuna have a fascinating story of their own of the brother-sister love. It is said that after years of not being able to meet her and her becoming Yamini, the Goddess of Night, when the brother sister duo finally met, Lord Yamraj was so touched on seeing his sister that, he declared any brother who gets an aarti and tika from his sister does not need to fear death.

Rakhi and Mahabharatha:
The story of Krishna and Draupadi is is one of the most prominent stories of the brother-sister love. So on sankranti as Lord Krishna was flying a kite he accidentally cut his finger in response to which Draupadi quickly tore a piece of cloth from her sari and tied on Lord Krishna’s finger in order to stop the bleeding.
This was the moment when they transitioned from being friends to being brother and sister as Lord Krishna, in that moment took an oath to protect Draupadi from any harm for eternity.

Finally, a little piece of history!

Have you heard of the story of how a rakhi helped the kindgom of Chittor in the Mughal Era?

Seeking protection from the attack of Bahadur Shah, Rani Karnavati of Chittor sent a rakhi as a call for help to Mughal Emperor Humayun.
Humayun immediately left for Chittor on receiving the rakhi but, by the time he reached it was too late. The Rani had already committed Jauhar in order to protect her honor. He avenged his rakhi sister's death by defeating Bahadur Shah and reinstating her son as the king of Chittor.

In the tiny village of Sarenga, West Bengal, Mrs. Sraboni Khatua, a primary school teacher is rallying the housewives of her village to put their skills to good use, with Rakshabandhan just around the corner.

Mrs Khatua started an association called ‘मेघेर पलोक’ in 2019. She wanted to encourage the women of her village to use their craftsmanship and strive for self sufficiency.

These women procure raw materials from Kolkata with some difficulty and make unique handbags and delicately designed rakhis.

Last year they could only sell their bags and rakhis in the neighbouring village's fair and manage a profit of Rs 2000.

This year, Bharat21 is seeking public participation in helping women of ‘मेघेर पलोक’ hit greater heights. You can buy any number of these lovely rakhis and send them to the Jawans of the Indian army as a token of gratitude.

This is a nonprofit initiative and all proceeds will go to the women behind the rakhis in Sarenga.
