We always associate slenderness with columns!
Did you know that there is a clause in IS 456 that limits the slenderness of beams, lateral stability point of view.
See the info in the post image and comment if you knew about this?
Want to know more about stability of buildings? Comment and I will share.
Civil engineers are entrusted with an important mission
Finding innovative solutions that provide a meaningful contribution to our environment and improve the lives of those in their community.
Happy EARTH DAY
An IS 456 clause that is Lesser thought about!
Fire Resistance Requirement is a lesser thought about point by most structural engineers. NBC mandates minimum fire resistance.
As the complications in usage increases in these times, sufficient importance shall be provided to fire risks.
Even if the fire risk is mitigated by non-structural means, there is a stipulated minimum member size as per Fig 1 (Page 36) of IS 456.
If you adopt this, the structural member size requirement can be much higher than what we think.
If you are a civil engineer, its worth to look at this Fig 1 in Page 36 of IS 456

We know we need to adhere to codes of practice. Many do adhere. Many makes blatant violation of the provisions.
For those who sticks to the codes of practice - It is good if we try to understand the logic of the clauses.
Some clauses are strength point of view, some for stability and some for serviceability.
There are some clauses that are construction related too.
Some of these clauses may be site specific or conditions specific.
Some clauses may be invalid in the current circumstances.
If the designer knows the logic of such clauses, then the designer can adopt his discretion with justification.
Todayโs question is such.
If you look at SP 34, it mandates 3 number of column ties mandatory inside footings. Have you ever thought the logic!

5 things you should do to economize your design!
Comment if you have any additional points to add on
Many times Engineers are pressurized by clients to hit economy. Economy is only after meeting the code requirement !!
However, fact is that engineers are some times not fine tuning the process as much needed to hit the economy!

Did you know that Today is WORLD ART DAY?
More than that it has a relation with Structural Design.
Da Vinci , on whose birthday World Art Day is celebrated, was not just an Artist but also a Town Planner and some one interested in economy of structural designs.
Let us celebrate World Art Day and enjoy Structural Design as an Art!

How do you succeed to achieve your dream career?
Most available survey shows that only 5% of learners complete a learning that they started and achieve the learning outcome.
Andโฆthese 5% are the ones who excels in their career.
So, what are the traits of these successful learners?
They focus and prioritize โ They focus on one thing at a time and finish it off. They make use of available time. They donโt get confused on what to learn.
They speedup learning with out compromise. They seek help from mentors to learn the nuances of consulting which is more important.
They know their weakness as much as they know their strength.
There is dedication and a systematic method.
There are many more qualities that helps a real transformation.
What is your favorite learning method?

Your Safety is more important than any thing else!
Say No to inspect if these safety precautions are not adopted at site.
It is ok to say NO. You need to be Safe first!
Any crack any where ,fingers will be pointed at you if you are a civil or structural engineer.
1) Have a great understanding of what you are doing
2) Foresee what can go wrong and take precautions
3) Ensure others know what they have to do

4 Virtues that we need to bring in Building Design
Good configuration
This means having regular geometry, avoiding cantilevers and complicated shapes.
Proper position and sizes of columns and shear walls
Lateral Strength
Building should have a minimum lateral strength in each direction. This shall be uniformly distributed as well. This will ensure the buildings meet the Eq. Resistant design philosophy.
Adequate Stiffness
This will ensure that the occupants donโt feel any discomfort and the contents in the buildings are not damaged during Earth Quakes.
Ductility
It is easy to understand as the property opposite to brittleness. This allows time for evacuation by avoiding brittle failure
Read the blog for elaborate understanding of Ductility๐๐ผ

There are 100s of reasons but all reasons lead to only 1๏ธโฃ simple reason ๐ 1. Unable to Learn.
Why does this happen?
Because most are unable to finish a course or a learning they started.
Simply because they donโt know what & how they have to learn.
Because there is no planning of learning. No thoughts on interests and outcome.
There is no focus.
Learning is not a 1 week or 1 month affair. Itโs like a Test match cricket.
Take 1 session at a time and progress.
You get an outcome when you also know to demonstrate what you learnt!

CPD may be a new term for many young Engineers.
Itโs โContinued Professional Developmentโโ.
It is much needed for young and experienced alike. After all new learning is refreshing.
It can be learning a bit of Structures if you are a Site Engineer or vice versa so that your understanding on the others requirement improves.
It can be learning a new tool at work. CPDs can be anything that develops you, improves you and makes you more resourceful.
Many Engineering bodies like ICE & IStructE mandates CPDs for their member Engineers.

A Structural Engineer ensures a structure is stable, strong and useable.
Which of this criterion is more important?
A building needs to be stable first to be useable
Strength is useful if it is stable
If it is not useable then being stable is not useful
All 3 points go hand in hand and in the process you need to ensure the structure is buildable economically.
To ensure these 3 points, we need to do so many other auxiliary things to perform the role well.
Want a FREE course on this aspect?

Discuss in comments what you think is the most important role of a Structural Engineer.
Structurally ,What do you think about the bridge collapse?
A sad accident. RIP the people who lost their lives.
Let us discuss what could structural engineers do better to save lives by averting similar accidents.
Please comment your answers.
If you find these simple things confusing then it is time for you to look at structural principles that helps you take better and independent decisions at site.
You know what?
Structures and site engineering are inseparable. You enjoy your work when you know what you are doing.
You add value to your work, when you know what you are doing.
If not, your can be replaced easily as you are doing a non engineering work!
