Poseidon as the overlord in western mythology is identical to the Deity Varuna of the Rigveda. The first 10 sutras of this are dedicated and extol the seemingly endless hegemonic powers of Varuna who is portrayed as lord of the heavens and earth and everything in between. This is mythologically the time when the dichotomy of gods and demons (devas and asuras) was still not established; so in this primordial state Varuna ruled and dispensed his law (justice is at a lower echelon).
Subsequently when the celestial pantheon, as it were, became more regulated with the introduction of the hero of the Veda- Indra, Varuna takes a mentoring backseat and is now only responsible for the cosmic waters, floods, clouds and rain with other deities (vasus, rudra, soma, dyaus etc) taking up specific roles.
This later Varuna in the Rigveda is identical to Poseidon of the western mythology.
And now Putin names his most dangerous weapon Poseidon!
