Priyanka Shapuram, Talent Acquisition Specialist, who Restarted her career with us, reflects on her transition from being a full-time mom to a career woman:
“I first developed an interest in Human Resources during an internship in college, then through campus placement I found a job in Talent Acquisition and Client Development – a field I really liked working in for three years. After which I decided to get married and start a family. Since I wanted to focus my energies on my personal life, I took a break of two and half years, during which time I became a mother to a beautiful baby. However, I always wanted to join the workforce. After all, what use is so many years of learning, and the skill set I worked hard to hone, if I didn’t use it? Plus I enjoyed being financially independent.
Gati-KWE’s Restart programme, is just the right program for women like me who aspire to come back stronger. In fact, I believe my journey to becoming a mother has made me stronger and more mature, and I’m able to balance my professional and personal life well. Helping me find my bearings in the organization are my seniors, who not only gave me a very warm welcome but also supported and guided me every step of the way.
When you’re a full-time mother and homemaker it is not easy, but kudos to companies like Gati-KWE who recognise our talent and see potential in us.
I believe every woman needs an opportunity to .”
Humbled and honored that my journey was shared by Allcargo Logistics Limited team.
Surbhi Rastogi her career with Allcargo Logistics as Total Rewards Lead, after taking a break to focus on her family. Here’s her story in her own words:
“I started my career with Infosys Technologies Ltd after acquiring a degree in management, and then moved to GE Capital in London, which proved to be a turning point in my life – I became a mother. When she turned one, we moved back to India where I joined Coca-Cola India Inc. as their Rewards Lead for India and South West Asia. But due to the cross-continental move, my daughter fell ill frequently and it became difficult to manage so many changes simultaneously. The lack of quality childcare in India is crippling to new mothers who seek to pursue their careers without compromising on the care of their children, and hence, I had to take a break. During this break, my family was enriched with the birth of my second daughter. This time again I tried re-entering the corporate world, when she was around a year old. But with two children it was even more tough. Hence, I decided to take a longer break until my children were more independent.
One would assume such a long gap on my CV would hinder corporates. But the world is changing. I was delighted when Allcargo identified my skills as a mother – patience, ability to multitask, time management, conflict management, empathy, and negotiation – to be an asset. I joined Allcargo under the Restart programme – it is exactly the kind of opportunity women on a break need – a chance to ease their way back into the corporate while balancing family life. For me personally, Restart has given me the best of both worlds – I am able to contribute productively towards the organizational objectives without feeling the guilt of neglecting my children. The most important cog in this wheel is having a supportive leader and team – and I am truly blessed to have one!
My two daughters look up to me and I want them to see a strong, independent woman. They should know they don’t have to choose family over their ambitions.
After all when my kids ask me “What if I fall? My response is always, “What if you fly?”
