About NSS-
National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary organisation launched in the Gandhiji’s birth century year,1969. The programme aimed to promote students’ personality development by the means of community service. Starting from a handful of 37 universities, today it has got more than 3.2 million student volunteers from all over the country. About NSS, IIT-KGP-
In IIT-KGP, NSS has been made
a part of core academic curriculum for about one third of the first and second year undergraduate students. The programme comprises of weekly village activities and a minimum of one compulsory annual camp. Insight of our activities-
Regular activities-
• Education- From each unit, a teaching team is selected who give weekly tutuions to village school children or children of poor workers in the campus.
• Cleanliness and Environment preservation- Tree plantation, garbage picking, purification of water resourses,’tripal’ distribution for rain water conservation and waste management through indegenious techniques.
• Spreading Awareness- Spreading general awareness on issues of health and hygiene by organising rallies, street play or ‘nukkad’ etc.
• Not cash but ‘Kind’ donation- Distribution of clothing and apt books to village residents. Special activities-
• Blood donation camp- The camp was organised at the time of maximum blood scarcity. An appreciable response was observed when a healthy number of students, professors along with their families and other working staff turned up voluntarily.
• National Youth Day-An observance rally was organised within the campus and a concluding function was held.
• ST/SC certificate distribution- Volunteers of units 12 and 15 of NSS – IIT Kharagpur have been working for more than a year to facilitate issuance of SC/ST certificates to residents of Rangametia and Sholadahar villages. During a survey they realized many at these villages did not have their SC/ST certificates – a basic necessity for receiving a number of governmental assistance. Distribution of the first instalment of 50 certificates took place on the occasion of NSS day celebration on October 5, 2013.
• Thallassemia Awareness Camp- Unit 11 of NSS organized a Thalassemia awareness camp at Talbagicha High School on February 8, 2014. Following up on this a serum testing programme was undertaken at Talbagicha High School on March 1, 2014 with participation from Midnapore Medical College and Saptarshi Vivekananda Society. More than 80 high school students their teachers, IIT Kharagpur students and faculty members got their blood tested.
• NSS Annual Camp- A 7-day annual camp was organized for 510 NSS volunteers at Ayma area in the outskirts of Kharagpur. The students prepared the map of the local village after surveying Ayma, Arambati and Nayapara areas. As a part of community service, the volunteers repaired the existing roads in these areas. They also worked on the cleanliness of the area.
• Republic Day, 2014- NSS volunteers actively took part in the celebration of Republic Day in the IIT Kharagpur. Volunteers facilitated the celebration by organizing local school children and providing refreshments to them.
• Annual Day- Distribution of certificate for the best volunteer in the annual camp and cultural programs.
• Medical Camps- A medical camp was organised by unit 6 at Gholghoria Primary School. It involved the participation of about 180 villagers. Another camp was organised by unit 15 at Shodalahar. About 50 villagers were treated there by one general physician.
