It's true that we can't save everyone. I've come to terms to that fact. There are happy endings and not so good endings as well. But whatever the ending might be, I still strive to do my best for all my patients. And this one made my day.

Yes, this is what I live for -- my patients getting better, pain free, happier. They are all always in my prayers that everyone can have happy endings despite the odds.

Thank you for the trust. You all inspire me to be my best. And to my multidisciplinary team, thank you for everything that you do.

There’s always hope for colorectal liver metastasis patients. Let’s hear from the panel of experts from an MDT perspective this coming June 25, 2021.

Dr. Vittoria Vanessa Velasquez

She is also known as "Doc Viva" to her patients, or simply "Viva" to her peers. Before pursuing Medicine, she took up B.S. Biology major in Genetics at the University of the Philippines in Los Banos. She decided to go in hiatus after college to contemplate whether Medicine is the right track. After a year of reflection (and travelling), she decided to enter Medical School.

She decided to enrol at St. Luke's Medical Center (College of Medicine) as advised by her parents (who are also paying for the tuition). Dr. Velasquez was a very active student -- she was the class representative in the student council in her first year, and was the council president on her 3rd year of Medical School. Her activity was not confined within the wall of the College of Medicine. She took the highest position in the Association of the Philippine Medical Colleges - Student Network during her clinical years. She strived to balance school and extracurricular activities. After 5-years of blood, sweat, and tears (plus financial burden of her parents), she finally earned her Medical Degree in 2007. She took her board exam on the same year.

Dr. Velasquez went on to residency after passing the Physician Licensure Examination, she entered the 5-year General Surgery program at the same institution. She served as the Chief Resident on her last year of residency training.

After training, she worked to gain financial independence from her parents. She served several communities outside Metro Manila (Aklan and Sagada), while reviewing for her specialty board exam. She was also appointed as Assistant Medical Director and Chief of Clinics in St.Theodore’s Hospital in Sagada. She travelled once a month and immersed in the community 15 days a month, while struggling to start her practice in Metro Manila. After two years, she was called back to her home institution (St. Luke’s Medical Center-Quezon City) to teach and at the same time approved to start a practice as a consultant. After 2 1/2 years of service in Sagada, she stepped-down from her position, and focused on her practice in Metro Manila.
