FROM THE QUIXOTIC TO THE SUBLIME - WHAT'S WISDOM GOT TO DO WITH IT?
To begin, let’s first address this question – What is wisdom, exactly? A Google search will yield the terms sagacity, good judgement, intelligence, erudition, philosophy, and knowledge. Also, the popular terms for wisdom are: common sense, good vibes, practical point-of-view. My professional and personal understanding is that wisdom is a special kind of knowledge and intelligence. It is an intuitive knowing acquired through direct life experience and devoted practice of specific life skills.
Wisdom is the radar for correct living; it is the counselor for good order in relationship with self and others. And, it is generally recognized that saints and sages of classical philosophy and world religions have declared that gaining wisdom is the singular purpose and destiny of the human experience.
Our journey of wisdom is the journey from egotism to humility. For our current purposes, egotism –simply put – is the absence of wisdom; and, humility is the all-encompassing presence of wisdom. Our wisdom journey begins when we identify and tame the inner beasts of our egotism. And, if egotism is our start point, then we need to know more precisely what egotism is: Egotism is us as we understand ourselves in life and in the world. And, for the most part, how we understand ourselves – despite our biologically-documented evolutionary gains – is not too far removed from our origins.
Notably, our fight or flight instinct continues to be the predominant driving force within us. So, essentially, fear and anger – basic to all animal nature – still holds major power over us. With the advent of human civilization, we have also added an emotion unique to us – guilt.
To move forward on our wisdom journey, we have to identify the things that most frighten us, makes us angry, or causes us to feel guilt, and then discover ways to respond dispassionately. To do this, we have to evolve out of, the thinking and feeling that feed our basic fears, anger, and guilt. And to do that, we must kill what we love.
Our challenge is that we unconsciously love or rely on the thinking and feeling that feed our fear, anger and guilt. We take our habitual negative reactions for granted, accepting them as barometers of how we understand our world, and believing them to be justified when they are actually doing us harm. The online course, “Being True to Yourself – Discovering What’s Real and What’s Not” provides instruction on this. To view the free webinar, go to the website listed on this page.
The wisdom journey ends when we become our inner love, through nurturing our inner beauty. However, getting to the end point of wisdom’s journey takes time, guided focus, and dedicated practice. To get to the end, we must love what we hate. The end of the journey is pure beauty. But, as it turns out, we find that we must embrace thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that we have habitually avoided or found outright repugnant – such as choosing to be patient, rather than taking action or, choosing to just be, rather than to do. In other words, wisdom helps us to “don’t’ just DO something, SIT there.” The “Being True” online course provides wisdom models on how to embrace the truth of what we avoid within ourselves.
Clearly, we are complex beings and our human nature is multifaceted. This explains why we humans are not static in the way we relate to life. Everything about us is variable and varies over time. In reaction to today’s troubled politics and clashing cultures, our minds, our bodies, and our spirits are in a constant state of flux.
Also, a basic perspective on what we are dealing with as complex, multifaceted human beings is to agree that our waking state is defined by several layers of awareness known as conscious, subconscious, unconscious, and superconscious. And to repeat – our diverse nature will likely operate in different ways at different times throughout our lifetime. This occurs in such a way that we experience ourselves sometimes in chaos and, other times at peace. And, sometimes, we experience these all in the same day, given our stress-driven, hyperactive lives.
Since our being is complex, multifaceted, and multidimensional, the “Being True” course series identifies and discusses four basic, enduring and pervasive human natures that energize us and influence how we engage and experience our lives. The course provides specific food for thought and offers support and counsel on wisdom’s journey.
