“Learning to fly”

Look Mama… No hands !
Fearlessly riding up and down a giant ferris wheel, counting the circular moments of thrill.
I was all of seven (or seventeen) maybe, chasing one adventure after another.
The Jurassic world came alive one day when we learnt the lessons of pain and longing, and dived right into the spiral of time travel. All with invisible bridges , incomplete pathways , deep caverns, and a sea of abyss.
Acrophobia !!!
Now what of those wings that will raise me higher, the words that lift and defy the ordinary? What made gravity an etched reality, so pronounced again and again?
Yet when I paint, with those colours that appear new every time and the images that become mine when I draw….,I travel to discover places that I think I have never left before.
And you ask me, how do I fly???
Here, retelling the story of yet another painting….
The image on this canvas, is adapted from an 18th century coloured print “Amazone” by French artist Francaises Libres. It shows a woman standing tall against broken shackles.
Titled "1791"
Size : 5 x 4 feet
Medium: acrylic on canvas
Year :2003
This painting is a tribute to mark the time when women artists were permitted to exhibit at the prestigious Salon in Paris with no limit and were acknowledged by name and allowed participation in competitions.
It’s also the first work I painted in a series of many which shows women from history....known or lesser known.
Sharing my piece of art from my history of 20 years ago to commemorate World Heritage Day ‘24 !
Teacher’s are a special soul…….

“What is a Homecoming?“
When your present and history becomes one and you realise that even as time goes ahead and more and more things seem to change….nothing really changes❤️
That’s what having this exhibition of “The Magic Thread” @ FloorOne, Juhu was to me. Meeting dear school friends, old neighbours, family doctors, teachers, friends of family, dear aunties-uncles, long lost cousins and even the Gen z’s of every home!
Thankful to all for being there, with eagerness, curiosity, enthusiasm and blessings.
Bhadresh, (my dear long lost friend ☺️), thank you for inviting me and finding a way to get me here… I enjoyed every bit!
Here’s wishing you great success with Floorone, and cheers to many more adventures together!
Few months ago I had a small quite open studio at Baroda with friends and teachers. Spread through the week, it was just casual studio time spent sipping tea, discussing my art journey or simply chatting.
Thanks Sandhya, for reviewing my works in the new issue of Art India post the open studio. Documenting and recording this show through your words and perspective helps me reflect on my works. And whenever I will read it in retrospect it will motivate and bring back fond memories.

(Unapologetically Alice)
Alice does not stop there.
As she turns another page,
A new adventure unveils itself and now she is at a point of no return.
Getting more and more submersed in the web of desires.
While surrounded by temptations
A piercing sense of dissatisfaction engulfs her.
While the surreal world has entered her own, she
stands now to defend her credence
Where time and precinct do not play a role in defining her.
Where she stands alone
But yet that is enough
Alice, the traveller,
does not trade her identity
Alice, the fighter
Feels tall in front of any dragon
Alice, the empathetic
is there for deliverance
Alice is complete.

Learning is a continuous process and often I feel I learn from the students more than they learn from me.
Time and again there have been visits from university students and those who are preparing to go to art schools. Talking to them gets my thoughts rolling and different perspectives to my art practice appear through their questions.
Some recent and not so recent visits of children from Cloudscape studios, Navarachna university and M.S. University students.
Veins that run deep….
like memories which can’t be erased,
take years of nurturing and care.
In layers of blue and green, these paintings are reminders of those leaves patiently placed over one and other and built to rise.

I tend to work in pairs at my studio.
A habit I have since my early college years.
I think maybe an idea that germinates while I’m working on once piece needs to spill over right then and that’s when I’m complete with the original thought to begin with.

Some of the water colours I displayed in The Magic Thread collection began to take shape during the lockdown months. Many of the images that came about in these paper works I have carried to my larger canvases as I moved on. But the nature of this fluid medium probably remains closer to me and my language…. almost therapeutic .
A dialogue with the audience is probably more of a learning for me than the viewer. In process it initiates an introspection into my works and creates a passage for a new dimension to enter when I go back to the studio.

“The Magic Thread”
Listen to that hum, mother….
Is that ‘time” moving slowly?
I have a dream;
Ride me through in gallops to that happy place
And let me stay there, where nothing changes.
Thus said Peter……
While weaving the tapestry of life,
pulling at some loose strings
only unravels events, uncomprehending
My vulnerable self, oblivious of.

States of Nature :
In how many ways can I hide?
With a whiff of sweet scent to lead you astray
Bright colours of celebration, sprayed
Little known stories
Camouflaged begins the scene
What with this portrait in front of you,
The deep river against which I lean
Like a patchwork doll, adorned with many patterns
I prepare myself with a dash of red,
A shade of confidence,
Armed, unchallenged and filtered
Here, adorned in my finest
Now you see me, now you don’t !

One may think the other is unaware of your movement and yet you are more visible than ever.
So let’s look at the picture from this angle.
When the target has become the dictator.
Now the insignificant common is larger than life
And the modest personality rises
Camouflaged with nature yet taller than ever
the bird can read your mind
and does not need to wait for your next move
Trust, is something like that
Your belief is stronger than ever
While you are oblivious of when the story has changed.

“Songbirds in spring”
(Recited and transformed this fall, October ‘23)
There is a song for everyday.
One for the day when life begun, and then for the day when you began to learn and then laughed, even for the one when you fell…,
but didn’t cry.
You just rose again
and then again .
Keeping afloat a mind which overflows ever so often.
The drumbeats of celebration resonate in surround sound through the window.
How many more songs to be told?
Stories don’t end, they just get narrated differently each time. The colours for each season and metaphors for every occasion.
All we really own is this moment.
The rest is already bartered between history and perception.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Dussera !🙏
“The sea deep within…….“
Talked with the ocean
Other day ,
In all due respect ..
I said,
“You bore me“
The endless monotony,
predictable, overwhelming scale
Take me the islands instead
“They excite me !”
Interruptions,
surprises full of textures and pathways.
When I’m having fun why do you remind me that you are in my tears, the blood and sweat.

If there was a right answer to every riddle, I would be the girl with an “golden egg”.
In the laughter of light, I am swaying in the shade. Just one open door and the world was never same again for Alice. She walked past the live flowers and befriended a talking feline creature, lived through tragedies and victories. And when the time was right, she went into the looking glass only to begin the adventure all over again.
Growing in all directions, we are in the constant state of flux.
Some wild and tireless, to fragile and vulnerable. Moving from the nest of gladness to an all engulfing existence, our scattered reality is but an illusion.
Which like Alice, I relive again and again.
There is no perfect time, only the right moment.

“Words are just signifiers “
Acrylic on canvas
7 feet x 5 feet
2010
You own all things of history when their stories get woven into your own life.
The “monumental” thought becomes more valuable than a timeless object itself when we learn from the ideas of the past and relive their experiences in our lives through every generation that passes.
So what really becomes priceless is not the thing itself but the stories it tells us.
All things old are mine. Used objects in my home ..... in which I store things, on which I sit on, what I wear or what I read. They are vehicles of flashback, like entering a museum, observations into lives once lived, into dreams and hopes and changes.
These are reminders, that nothing remains the same forever .....
except, the thoughts left behind, those ideas on withering papers, that touch felt and passed through scented bottles, photographs and painted pictures, poems and letters filled with words which become just signifiers in forever time.
Celebrating World Heritage day with timeless art!!
