Our clients, two working doctors and their three children desired a unified home, combining two separate duplexes into one.

The designers faced the challenge of creating a seamless flow between the duplexes. They rearranged the bedroom positions, removing walls to open up the space and create a unified living area. The entrance welcomed guests with a small sitting space where the doctors could attend to patients if needed. The living room was divided into distinct sections, including a formal sitting area, a cozy family sitting area with a TV and low-height lounging sofa, and a well-appointed dining space. The ground floor also featured a functional kitchen and a guest bedroom.

On the first floor, the family room became the heart of the home, providing a space for bonding and relaxation. Separate rooms were created for the twins and the elder son, catering to their individual needs and personalities. The second floor housed a versatile multipurpose room, boasting beautiful L-shaped convertible sofas and two accent chairs, offering a space for relaxation, entertainment, and intimate conversations.

The design of the house was inspired to creat a comfortable and harmonious environment. A color scheme of greens, browns, blues, greys, and whites was carefully chosen to evoke a sense of unity. The living room featured warm-toned veneer against white walls and grey floors, creating a cozy atmosphere. The master bedroom combined warm veneer with a green hue in the upholstery, providing a serene retreat for the doctors. The son's room was designed for multi-purpose use, with a study area and storage for games and music equipment. The kitchen was functional and lively, featuring an off-white countertop and glossy ivory gloss acrylic finishes. The furniture throughout the house embraced minimalist and muted forms, creating a spacious and soothing ambiance.

This home for a joint family epitomizes India modern, in which natural stone and timber, Indian artefacts and other ethnic elements co-exist amicably. “The client’s expectations were quite clear from the outset,” reveals architect Ajay Singh of Design Centre. “On a broader level, he certainly wanted the design elements to be derivatives of traditional and cultural roots, and yet speak a contemporary vocabulary.”
The design team, first froze the designing and material palette. Gradually, they approached the Indian artefacts, motifs synonymous with native ethnicity, and furniture pieces with modern forms and traditional details. Thus, the final theme of the space was decided as “Weaving of Traditional and Contemporary”.
The desire for being surrounded by nature translated into the use of natural stone — which became a statement material for this project. The bedrooms became personal spaces for each user and were requested to be designed differently from one another. Indian granite has been used for cladding, while white and grey Italian marble sprawls on the floor. Solid wood for cladding and furniture, black granite for table tops, traditional moldings for lobby walls and brass for ornamentation complete the main palette. Linen, cotton, and genuine leather feature as upholstery and soft furnishings. Refined is one of the best adjectives to describe the gorgeous chandelier in the living room. The wall lights in the corridor, lamps and shades in the rooms are a perfect combination of elegance and sophistication.

Home to a closely-knit three generational family, the Sarnath Residence project creates a heaven for each individual who inhabits it, celebrates subtlety of expression and timelessness of design. While it presents a vision of simplicity, "the intricacy of design unfolds bit by bit, allowing the materiality to come through markedly".

The ground+three storey built-form was articulated as a balanced orchestration of massing, extrusions and set-backs. Voids established a seamless programme, while lofty volumes facilitated the entry of light and air, allowing them to travel in a better fashion.

The spatial programme of the house and the zoning of the plot were dictated by the fact that the parking, utility areas and a party hall had to be placed on the ground floor. Above this, the mezzanine floor houses the common areas such as the living room, the dining area and the kitchen, forming an interconnected entity, in addition with the guest bedroom. Three bedrooms lie on the first level with the pooja space and the last storey is devoted to entertainment/leisure spaces such as the terrace garden, swimming pool and office.

The interior shell, which is mainly neutral and features wood and grey tones, is energised with strategic application of colour brought in via soft furnishings. At the heart of the home, the free-flowing living and dining areas don a peaceful white hue, and is accentuated with wood tones and bold floral motifs in the furniture, furnishings and accessories. All the private bedrooms - for the grandparents, parents and children - echo their personal design preferences and needs, yet remains in sync with the design language of the house.
