Vasai, also called Bassein, lies about 45 kms of Palghar City. it is located in Vasai taluka. The fort in the old city was headquarter of the Portuguese in the north, next in importance to Goa. The coastal land-fort of Vasai was surrounded by sea on three sides and to the landslide it had a moat which was filled by sea-water. its 4.5 kms long strong stone wall had 11 bastions. The fort had two gates- the westward land-gate. There was also a small citadel in the fort well-equipped with water-tanks, store-houses, armory, etc., the fort also had fields for growing grains and vegetables. All the old structures inside the wall are now in ruins.

Vasai was the main naval base and sort of ship-building centre of the Portuguese. it was here in 1802 AD, the Peshwa Bajirav signed the infamous тАШTreaty of BasseinтАЩ which virtually dissolved the Maratha Confederacy. Finally, the fort and the city of Vasai were ceded to the British in 1817 AD.

Exploring the 7 Wonders of India

Nalanda is an ancient university located in Bihar, India. It was founded in the 5th century CE and was one of the most important centers of learning in the world for over a thousand years. Nalanda University was renowned for its studies in Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Hinayana Buddhism. It also taught grammar, logic, philosophy, medicine, astronomy, and mathematics.

Nalanda University was destroyed by the Turkish ruler Bakhtiyar Khilji in the 12th century CE. The ruins of Nalanda University are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nalanda was established by emperor Kumaragupta I of the Gupta Empire around 427 CE,[11] and was supported by numerous Indian and Javanese patrons тАУ both Buddhists and non-Buddhists.[12][13] Nalanda continued to thrive with the support of the rulers of the Pala Empire (r. 750тАУ1161 CE). After the fall of the Palas, the monks of Nalanda were patronised by the Pithipatis of Bodh Gaya.[14] Nalanda was likely attacked by Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khilji (c. 1200), but it managed to remain operational for decades (or possibly even centuries) following the raids.[15][16][17]

Over some 750 years, Nalanda's faculty included some of the most revered scholars of Mahayana Buddhism. The historian William Dalrymple, said of Nalanda that "at its apex, it was the undisputed scholarly centre of the Mahayana Buddhist world".[18] The faculty and students associated with the monastery included Dharmapala, Nagarjuna, Dharmakirti, Asanga, Vasubandhu, Chandrakirti, Xuanzang, ┼Ъ─лlabhadra and Vajrabodhi.[19][20][21][22][23] The curriculum of Nalanda included major Buddhist philosophies like Madhyamaka, Yogachara and Sarvastivada, as well as other subjects like the Vedas, grammar, medicine, logic, mathematics,[24] astronomy[25] and alchemy.[26] The mahavihara had a renowned library that was a key source for the Sanskrit texts that were transmitted to East Asia by pilgrims like Xuanzang and Yijing

Exploring 7 wonders of India

One of the most stunning monuments of religious significance, a true masterpiece of architecture proudly stands in the form of Sun Temple at Konark. A culmination of Oriya architecture, the temple is a wonderful place as the language of stone defeats the human language here. Built in 13th century by King Narasimhadeva, the temple is designed in the shape of a colossal chariot with seven horses and twelve wheels, carrying the sun god, Surya, across heavens.

Located at a manageable distance from the seat of Lord Jagannath, Puri at 35 kms; the temple is around 65 kms from the capital city of Bhubaneswar. The name of Konark temple is an amalgamation of two words--Kona meaning corner and Arka meaning the Sun. That is to say that the Sun god worshipped in Ark Kshetra is called Konark. Legend says that after killing the demon Gyasur, Lord Vishnu placed his belongings at several places to commemorate the victory. With His conch at Puri, Disc in Bhubaneshwar and Mace in Jajapur; He placed the Lotus at Konark.

Chiplun, the city that offers you time among mango groves next to the beautiful lake, Vashishti. This town is most known for its white sand beaches and beautiful mango and cashew groves by the Vashishti river.

Chiplun, meaning 'The abode of Lord Parashurama' got its name because of the famous temple it houses. Chiplun also happens to be an industrial town and most people coming to this side tend to go to the River view resort, a popular getaway on weekends. The sunsets that can be seen from both the Vashishti river and Koyna Dam are so attractive that people book rooms to wake up to the sight of the brilliant scenery. Chiplun falls as an important station on the Konkan railway route for trains heading to Mumbai from Goa and South India. This gives you all the more reason to stop by at this little heavenly place for a breath of fresh air before you greet the city of dreams, Mumbai and all the chaos that comes with it. Travellers describe their experience here as the perfect picnic spot, with the scent of mangoes wafting through the air.
