Reconfiguring Industrial Sector Masterplan: Phase 1
Automotive Services and Distribution Area
After conducting theoretical, field research and assessment we concluded that the statues of industrial sector in Erbil, Iraq needs reshape in addition to identifying its planning and design standards of an industrial city, as currently it’s facing a number of issues including: (establishment of random facilities, environmental pollution, dreadful social phenomenas,..etc.). Our proposed process of reconfiguration is as follows:
1- Erbil’s urban fabric is distributed accordingly around main circles of road networks. Reorganize the entire industrial sector of Erbil outside the 150m highway circle, in four opposing zones in gradient according to their environmental impact from light industries to heavy industries. Distributing on these four zones solves problems such as (distribution of traffic, ease of access, smoother transition & connection with other cities as the four zones lay on the main outside roads accesses to/from other cities,…etc.).
2- Relocating the existing industries into the new zones in different phases. Currently Erbil’s industrial areas are dominated by auto repair services, which is why phase 1 of this project is the relocation of this industry into four different sites, in the four different zones mentioned earlier, placing it in a category accordingly with its environmental impact level.
3- Choosing one of the selected four sites to design a peil project (sample project) on it, and apply the studied standards to it. As the standards, mechanisms, infrastructure and sustainable systems will work as a foundation to be later applied to the other 3 projects and later following phases.
The sample project was designed on an area of (4,300,000)sqm, with the targets:
1- applying sustainable systems such as (Sewage water treatment & reuse, Rain water storage and usage, Solar roofs) and using local resources to reduce its environmental impact and be self-sufficient.
2- make it as social and friendly as possible as an environment and clear the dreadful social phenomenas attached to it. (an example is the current industrial areas are not a friendly or safe feeling environment for females. And many other different cases..etc.)
3- Even with applying point 1,2 still aim to maintain an image and context of an industrial area.
