Socotra is a Yemeni archipelago made up of six islands on the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa near the Gulf of Aden, located about 240 kilometers (150 mi) east of the coast of Somalia and 380 kilometers (240 mi) south of the Arabian Peninsula.[3] The archipelago includes [4] a main island, which is Socotra, and five other islands, which are Darsa, Samha, Abd al-Kuri, Sayal Abd al-Kuri and Sayal Socotra [5] and seven rocky islands, which are Sirah, Radad, Adlah, Karshih, Sihar, Thaan Thal and Jalis [6], and Socotra is the largest of the Arab and Yemeni islands The length of the island is 125 km, its width is 42 km, and the length of the coastline is 300 km. The capital of the island is Hadibo, and the population of the island, according to the 2004 census, was 175,020 thousand people.[7] The fame of Socotra and its historical importance go back to the beginning of the Stone Age, the flourishing of trade in sacred goods, and the activity of the ancient trade route - the frankincense road. Socotra was famous for producing dew, a type of incense, and for producing “Socotra patience” as the finest type of patience. Its importance increased and was mentioned to the peoples of the civilizations of the ancient world. Those who looked at the sacred commodities with a look of sanctifying incense, myrrh, aloes, frankincense and various spices, and they called the land that produced these commodities the holy land and for this reason Socotra Island was called by the ancient Greeks and Romans the island of happiness
سقطرى هي أرخبيل يمني مكون من ست جزر على المحيط الهندي قبالة سواحل القرن الأفريقي بالقرب من خليج عدن، وتقع على بعد حوالي 240 كيلومترًا (150 ميل) شرق سواحل الصومال و 380 كيلومترًا (240 ميلًا) جنوب شبه الجزيرة العربية.يشمل الأرخبيل جزيرة رئيسية وهي سقطرى، وخمس جزر أخرى هي درسة وسمحة وعبد الكوري، وصيال عبد الكوري وصيال سقطرى وسبع جزر صخرية وهي صيرة وردد وعدلة وكرشح وصيهر وذاعن ذتل وجالص ، وتعتبر جزيرة سقطرى أكبر الجزر العربية واليمنية، ويبلغ طول الجزيرة 125 كم وعرضها 42 كم ويبلغ طول الشريط الساحلي 300 كم، عاصمة الجزيرة حديبو، وبلغ عدد سكان الجزيرة حسب تعداد 2004م 175,020 ألف نسمة.ترجع شهرة سقطرى وأهميتها التاريخية إلى بداية العصر الحجري وازدهار تجارة السلع المقدسة، ونشاط الطريق التجاري القديم - طريق اللبان، حيث اشتهرت سقطرى بإنتاج الند وهو صنف من أصناف البخور، وبإنتاج «الصبر السقطري» كأجود أنواع الصبر وزادت أهميتها وتردد ذكرها إلى شعوب حضارات العالم القديم التي كانت تنظر إلى السلع المقدسة نظرة تقديس البخور والمر والصبر واللبان ومختلف الطيب، وكانوا يسمون الأرض التي تنتج هذه السلع الأرض المقدسة ولهذا سميت جزيرة سقطرى عند قدماء اليونان والرومان بجزيرة السعادة.
