So I am sure you have all seen or heard about the recent troubles of The Body Shop in the news. Sadly, we hear when you hear and don’t have information before you. But we do have some clarification.

It would seem administrators are being called in to help save the brand. This MAY mean some store closures, it MAY mean outing Body Shop mini stalls/shops into bigger department stores, it is likely to mean a bigger push to online sales.

Scrolling BBC news with my morning cup of tea and I come across this article on children using skin care that TikTok influencers are using.

Kids love to mimic others, and the older they get the more ‘fitting in’ with friends becomes important to them. Whilst we can’t change this, we can guide them to keep it appropriate.

IF your child wants a pamper product please do ask me to recommend something. I will make sure it is appropriate for them and I will say if it’s not appropriate. The Body Shop may not be the most exciting packaging or trending on TikTok but it is 92% (average) natural ingredients and we have ranges suitable for sensitive and young skin.

I am not here for the sell- I really do care about making sure a product is right for you. I was at a stall when a young girl age 12 came across wanting foundation. So we chatted about what she wanted the foundation to do for her skin. My heart dropped when she said she wanted it to look perfect. (I assure you her skin was flawless!). So I turned the conversation to good skincare, as foundation will not completely hide flaws, so let’s address the flaws. 💕Although they may have a similar appearance, toners and tonics serve very different purposes on your skin. Depending on your skin type, you are able to incorporate both products in your skincare routine or just one of them.

💜The purpose of a toner is to create an extra cleaning step for your skin. It will remove any extra dirt or bacteria off of your skin that your cleanser did not do. Toners work well for individuals with oily or irritated skin. It is essential to use a toner after you have worn makeup all day tp prevent future breakouts.

💛Tonics are typically a heavier product. Most tonics contain rose water and hyaluronic acid. Tonics open up your pores to prepare your skin for the hydration step in your skincare routine. Tonics serve as a hydration part in your skincare routine. Tonics will boost the glow appearance in your skin.

💚How do I know which product to use? If you are someone with oily or acne prone skin, you should lean more toward using a toner in order to clean your skin again. If you are someone with more mature or dry skin, a tonic would work best on your skin. as an additional hydration step.

Tonic vs Toner

❤️Tonics and Toners look very similar on the surface and even those in the beauty industry sometimes struggle to tell the products apart.

🧡In the traditional sense, toners were created as an extra “cleansing” step to remove any residue, act as an astringent for oily or inflamed skin and add extra nutrients to the skin to help prepare the skin for hydration. This is why Witch Hazel and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are common ingredients in toners, as they help strip away any oily residues and clear out pores to thoroughly prime the skin for the next steps.

💚Tonics, on the other hand, are an extra “hydrating” step which focuses on conditioning the skin and adding a moisture boost to one’s skin care routine.
Tonics tend to be heavier with humectants and moisturizing ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and rose water. In Asia, Tonics are sometimes referred to as “essences” but the key idea remains the same – while Toners are for clearing and toning, Tonics are for moisture boosting and conditioning.

Which one should I use?

💜While both can be included in a single skin care routine, most people would pick one or the other depending on their skin type. Normally, those with oily or blemish prone skin would stick to skin refining Toners, while dry or mature skin types find themselves more suited for hydrating Tonics as these provide the extra nutrients and moisture that they need. People living in dry climates may also benefit from a Tonic rather than Toners and vice versa for those living in high humidity locations.
