PARAISÓPOLIS. Investigation on informal space
This challenging and intriguing theoretical work aims to explore the spatial morphology of the mega-favela in São Paulo through the eyes of an architect, using the analytical method tested in the book INFORMAL ROOTING
Editor: RioBooks
PARAISÓPOLIS. A morphological atlas
This book starts from the observation that there is a global process of "rooting" of precarious settlements in metropolises, which structure themselves, persist, and become entrenched in the collective imagination, leading to an unprecedented socio-cultural transformation. The physical structure of these precarious
settlements adopts logics of stabilization and reorganization. In light of this phenomenon, this work aims to systematically analyze, using a novel methodology, the urban form of a specific type of precarious settlement, the favela. The project idea consists of applying the analytical methodology, developed and tested in the
favelas of Rio de Janeiro and documented in the book Informal Rooting (Tessari 2020), to the Paraisópolis favela in São Paulo. The analysis is conducted through an urban morphological perspective, a method that has not yet been explored with sufficient rigor and precision in the scientific literature. This approach emphasizes the urbanistic and architectural dimensions, reinforcing the importance of design actions and planning in understanding the territory, while overcoming the barriers posed by hyper-complexity, Marginalization, and difficulty of access. The themes addressed aim to make a significant contribution, or even provide a preliminary answer, to the following questions: What is the urban and spatial grammar generated in Paraisópolis? Can urban theory absorb these issues and translate them into precise methods of design action and intervention in the favela, more sensitive and coherent with its internal dynamics of evolution? The intention is to transform the analytical research on the urban form of the favela into an open tool of knowledge, self-awareness, and education, available to community inhabitants, urban policy makers, and architects and urban planners involved in projects of informal territory regeneration.
