Pier Luigi Tolaini’s dream was to make great red wine in his home region of Tuscany. With the help of his daughter Lia, they created the idea for a new wine named LEGIT. 🍷

LEGIT is a selection of the best Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on our estate in San Giovanni a Cerreto. The soil on this property is very sandy and this sandy soil adds a unique richness and elegance to the wine. The whole berries are fermented in large French oak and then aged for 24 months in barriques (70% new & 30% used). 🍇

Since this is our most LEGIT expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, we wanted to find someone LEGIT to put on the label. We chose to dedicate this wine to Thelonious Monk. We chose Thelonious because he’s considered to be one of the most influential jazz artists of all time. The photo on the label is from an LP named "Thelonius Monk - In Italy", recorded in 1961 during a concert in Milan. 🎶

This album cover was the inspiration for the label of our wine LEGIT (100% Cabernet Sauvignon). The album is a live recording of Thelonious Monk's concert at the Teatro Lirico in Milan in 1961. He is considered to be one of the most “LEGIT” jazz artists of all time and was a lover of all things Italy. �This makes for a fitting pairing, for what we consider to be one of the most LEGIT expressions of Italian Cabernet Sauvignon. 🍷

When Lia Tolaini Banville was considering how best to label this truly LEGIT Cabernet Sauvignon from Tolaini Wine’s San Giovanni vineyard in Tuscany, one name came immediately to mind – the incredible Thelonious Monk. To many, Monk embodied stylish originality and eternal hipness; he is often referred to as the “Genius of Modern Music.'' So Lia reached out to the Monk family and they quickly agreed to form a unique partnership to collaborate and celebrate Monk’s legacy through this wine. 🎶

Thelonious Monk was very popular in Italy and France and praised by both the press and general public. As Time Magazine noted “Abroad, at least, he is approached as if he were a visiting professor.” ❤️

The striking image on the label comes from the album cover of one of Monk’s most famous live concerts – “Thelonious Monk in Italy” – recorded live on April 21st, 1961 in Milano during a time of great acclaim for Monk. This concert was part of a seven-week European tour that included performances in Milano, Rome, and Bologna. From the album liner notes: "The Italians were very enthusiastic. The tickets for his concerts were expensive for the average citizen, but they came.” 🇮🇹

The story behind this wine dates back several years when the wine maker was tasting barrels and it was agreed this wine was a LEGIT Cabernet. A person who embodied stylish originality and eternal hipness and often referred to as the “Genius of Modern Music”, Thelonious Monk was envisioned for the label and name. LEGIT’s striking label, which is an iconic photo from the album cover of one of Monk’s most famous concert recordings from Italy! “A deep ruby red color with a nose that displays hints of green pepper, licorice and graphite melted with oak vanilla flavors. Full bodied with a ripe fruit palate.” This wine will be appreciated and savored for years to come.

"When you think of Italian wine, Cabernet Sauvignon is not your first thought—unless you’re talking about Toscana IGT. This wine has the profile you’d expect from a Cabernet Sauvignon: dark fruits, pencil lead, earth, and grip. It separates itself with an extra bit of herbaceous flavors, like sage, tarragon, and a hint of mint. Some classic Tuscan dust comes through as well. With all the dark fruit, there’s still a brightness to the wine, an energetic quality that really shines. The acid and tannins make this a wine you could lay down for several years, but still drink now. Bonus: if you’re a music fan, the label features Thelonius Monk, whose family graciously gave the winemaker permission to use his image on the label. Aptly named Legit, this wine is a legitimate example of a Tuscan Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lia Tolaini Banville’s collaboration with the Monk family began in 2016 when she was tasting barrels of the 2013 Cabernet with a colleague at Tolaini. They agreed this wine was a LEGIT Cabernet Sauvignon, with a true sense of place and an Italian soul. In wanting to pursue the name LEGIT, only one person came to mind.
