Just replaced a customer’s faulty mouse and their dog has found a new toy with the old one.

It never fails to surprise me when hardware suppliers blame each other or advise you need new equipment or even bamboozle a person with useless information. Indeed even our competitors try using techno speak to convince customers they need to spend a fortune.

Just been to a client this afternoon who after a weekend of struggling was ready to throw away a perfectly good printer because it wouldn’t connect to a new router and the manufacturer advised them to get a new one.

We pride ourselves on out of box solutions and a “no-jargon” approach and it worked! One happy customer who can print again with their existing printer and even got her new VOIP phone working.

Not been posting updates as been busy recently. Todays jobs were a break from the norm of fixing Windows and Apple hardware/software issues..

Diagnosing an issue with a wifi network that the suppliers blamed each other and my first taste at configuring a Netgear Orbi 860 mesh network for a local business. Given they had 700+MBps fibre internet and the speed at the furthest point was down to the high 500s I am well impressed. They are too!

Then, configuring and installing an SSL certificate for one of our Wordpress hosting customers who uses Amazon Web Services.

Second time this month, but a different customer...
In 2015, Apple decided to go from using "regular" hard drives to their own proprietary PCI-E storage. A customer came to me with a 2015 Macbook that had suffered a cup of sweet hot tea. The adaptor that enables me to read these drives via USB is stupid money and doesn't support encryption so.... fortunately the person she lives with has a 2015 Macbook (model A1502). A quick swap of the storage cards and I have managed to recover all her data.

Sometimes things just go right...
A customer brought a Macbook to me that had an accident with an energy drink and their IT department advised to put it on a radiator.... WRONG!!!
As a result the logic board was damaged not only by the liquid but the corrosive chemicals in the drink.
Fortunately their partner had the identical year Macbook so I was able to carry out a job on the board mounted NVM SSD - found in 2015 Macbooks by simply swapping them over.
Result - customer data recovered.

From time to time our work doesn’t just involve fixing computers. We were asked by Lee Archer Photography to fix a malware issue on their website when their hosting company didn’t help.

This week has been a varied one with onsite visits to Lincoln, Caistor, Horncastle and Binbrook to assist clients with their computer issues in the comfort and warmth of their homes. Throw in an email issue with one of our Microsoft 365 clients and a network audit for another client. I am now back in the office with a non-booting MacBook prior to a visit to a client in Louth this afternoon.

Today has been on-site visits to clients in the Louth area and one elderly lady I was shocked that a local computer business had charged her quite a considerable sum to ”put Windows Defender on her computer”.
WINDOWS DEFENDER or WINDOWS SECURITY IS FREE OF CHARGE AND PART OF WINDOWS 10 AND WINDOWS 11. In most cases, it is the only security software you need and is enabled automatically with Windows.

It may be raining outside but I’m in the office today with this 2020 MacBook Air in for a new screen. It looks as pretty inside as out.
Earlier in the week had a battery to replace on a 2018 MacBook and whichever fool at Apple thought it was a good idea to glue the battery to the case and trackpad wants their head examining. Scrapers, prybars, alcohol and heat made short work of it though.

Todays work… configuring and diagnosing a Windows XP RAID system for a client to use bespoke Dyno ECU programming software with. This is where the director, Michelle’s 28 years of IT experience comes in handy.

After a quiet one last week, it’s the usual Monday morning chaos booking work in. Unfortunately due to demand we have no appointments left until Tuesday 8th August.
Some of this weeks work, much of which will be carried out in the comfort of the customer’s home:
PC Hardware Repairs, Malware issue, Set up of a couple of new computers and transfer data from the old unit.
We’ve got a MacBook Air coming in tomorrow for a new battery. One day I’m providing on-site consultancy for a local business.

Still running a version of MacOS of High Sierra (10.13) or earlier?

Google has upgraded their security on GMail accounts so you can no longer connect on Mac Mail. Chrome will also no longer update leaving your Mac vulnerable when browsing the internet and may show sporadic security errors.

This mornings job was to repair a dead Olive 03HD music server with literally £1000s of a clients music collection on it. After purchasing another unit on an auction site for spares, a bit of mechanical and electronics work learnt in the 1990s…

A lot of our work is carried out on-site and we carry all the necessary equipment and a small supply of spares.
First job of the day.. migrating all a clients data to a new high speed SSD which will dramatically improve the performance of their PC which they were getting frustrated with.

I seem to be getting a collection of Apple MacBooks coming in for repair. (We do repair Windows PCs and laptops and offer a whole range of other services BTW)
One has been sent away to a trusted repairer I use for a logic board repair.
This one for a new battery and dead USB port, which looks to be corrosion related.
Another is “dead” so needs our Apple Diagnostics software running on it.
An old 2012 is waiting for a SSD upgrade and reload and will be for sale soon on behalf of a customer.

It seems despite the hefty price tag, Apple are building obsolescence in their newer products.

A couple of recovery jobs come to mind these past few days…
Recovering an entire music collection from a failed external hard drive.

Recovering a customers irreplaceable personal data from a corrupted Windows installation. Turns out the hard drive was scrambling the data written to it.
