Navigating Your Baby's Hunger Cues: A Thoughtful Approach to Feeding

Forget the old advice of feeding every two hours – it doesn't fit your unique baby's needs. Babies don't follow clocks; they follow hunger cues.

Just like you might feel hungry soon after a meal, your baby craves responsiveness. Recognizing hunger cues can be tricky, but it's key. Aim to feed during the early or mid-cue stages when your baby is calm and ready.

Feeding on demand means responding to your baby's needs, not a clock. They might switch between breasts, eat for varying durations – it's all normal. Forget strict schedules; trust your baby's cues for a beautiful feeding journey!

Bottle Feeding Insights 🍼✨

Introducing a bottle to your little one can bring unexpected challenges! Lactation Consultants caution against the 'negative overfeeding with bottles' cycle, often starting with a bottle that's too large for your baby's stomach.

Did you know that feeding a bottle to a baby lying down can lead to gravity feeding issues? Upside down, bottles may even leak automatically! When your baby is fed in a lay-down position, milk flows without pressure, causing stress. Baby faces a dilemma - swallow fast or risk choking, instinctively protecting their airway, potentially triggering a stress response.

Imagine your 3-day-old baby quickly downing a 2 oz bottle—likely a stress response! Similar to how anyone can eat two Big Macs, but it's not what our bodies truly need. The result? A too-full feeling, leaving your baby with tummy troubles - gassiness, stomach pain, and tears.

The common misconception? Parents think their crying baby is still hungry, leading to another large bottle. It becomes a cycle! To break free, follow the feeding guidelines of 1-1.5 oz per hour since the last feeding. Feed your baby upright to control the bottle flow, and try paced bottle feeding techniques. This supports a positive bottle feeding experience and eases the transition from bottle back to breast.

Let's share the wisdom for happy, healthy feeding journeys!

Have you seen the updated recommendations for mastitis self-care? Mastitis does affect most breastfeeding mothers at some point. It starts as internal breast inflammation (engorgement) which causes the the milk ducts to narrow and slows the milk flow. If the inflammation is not addressed it will soon turn into a bacterial breast infection. For most moms, it feels like you got hit with the flu! Body aches, fevers, chill, breast pain, etc. We now know that some of the previous recommendations were making matters worse with mastitis. To get you and your breasts feeling well again follow these self-care tips! It's important not to aggressively massage the breasts by hand or with a vibrating item like a toothbrush. This will create further breast inflammation rather than breaking up a clogged milk duct. Instead, try a lymphatic draining massage. This is a light touch on the breasts like petting your dog that will help reduce swelling and inflammation following the natural patterns of your lymphatic system in the breasts. Alternate Tylenol and ibuprofen to manage inflammation, pain, and fever. Avoid taking antibiotics unless medically necessary. Antibiotics are known to disrupt the microbiome of the breast's good bacteria, similar to yeast infections in women. If you do need antibiotics consider also taking a probiotic at the same time to maintain healthy bacteria throughout your body. We previously recommended things like feeding or pumping extra in a day to break the clogged duct. This actually creates a negative upcycle to your supply which makes matters worse. Continue to feed your baby or your pumping routine at your regular schedule so you don't then create an oversupply which makes you more prone to mastitis. Taking sunflower lecithin or choline supplement in the early stages of engorgement will help reduce inflammation, and help emulsify fatty milk globules if present to avoid further issues of clogged ducts, breast inflammation, and mastitis.

Holidays are a great time to get some family time in with your loved ones, but when you have a new baby, this can often add some stress. Infants can get overstimulated. We see babies being passed around the dinner table like your favorite side dish but it is not always the best for the baby. Here are some words of wisdom to take with you into this holiday season. Try to spread out how quickly the baby is passed around to everyone. A lot of different people and new faces in a short amount of time in conjunction with loud dinner conversation can leave infants feeling overwhelmed. They may suddenly be excessively fussy and won't settle easily. If you see this happening that is your cue that baby needs some quiet down time with mom to feel secure and to settle down again. Make sure you carve out time in your busy day to sit in a quiet room, even if it's just for feedings. If the baby is feeling overwhelmed, some time with a familiar face will work wonders. If it makes you uncomfortable just know you don't have to allow everyone present to hold, feed, or comfort your baby. You absolutely can sit back and hold, feed, and comfort your baby as needed. Mamas this holiday season, it's okay to just pass the turkey and not the baby. There will be plenty of holidays for people to spend time with them, it doesn't have to happen all at once.

There are many different scenarios that can cause damaged ni***es (persistent pain, cracking and bleeding.) The most common reason in the early days is a shallow latch. This happens when the baby clamps just on the tip of the ni**le which will cause pinching and friction trauma between the roof of baby's mouth and ni**le. To avoid this the best tip is ensure baby is getting a deep latch, latching onto the ar**la right under the tip of the ni**le. This will allow enough breast tissue into the mouth to stretch the tip of the ni**le into baby's soft palate which is where breastfeeding becomes comfortable. If you already have ni**le damage here's what you can do to treat it: 1) Moist wound healing is the breast practice to speed up ni**le healing. If you are not currently feeding baby always have a ni**le cream on. I recommend medihoney gel as it has antibacteria and antiinflammatory healing which is the most effective cream for fast ni**le healing. 2) Make sure you are using a deep latch technique while feeding to avoid further damage and promote healing. If you feel sharp pain always unlatch baby and try again. If you have a wound on your ni**le you will like still feel a dull ache because of the wound, the goal is to minimize pain and minimize further damage until your ni**le is fully healed. 3)After a feed express breast milk on your ni**le and let it air dry. 4) Even with damaged ni***es it is important to still remove frequently. If not you are at high risk for engorgement and mastitis which will make your pain exceedingly worse. This can by by direct feeding or pumping. Remember the goal is to minimize pain and further damage. 5) See a lactation consultant, especially if this issue persists past a few days or there is no sign of improved healing. There are other reasons for ni**le damage aside from a shallow latch. Seeing a lactation consultant will help you pinpoint exactly why this is happening, help you heal, and prevent it in the future. Breastfeeding should not be painful. If it is, that is your body telling you that you need help.
