The jacob sheep -

Jacobs are small, horned, black and white sheep with a somewhat goat-like appearance. Ewes weigh 80-120 lbs. and rams 120-180 lbs. The sheep are more than half white with colored spots or patches. The colored portions of the fleece are usually black, but they can also be brownish, or a lighter color called lilac. Their skin is pink, and they usually have black hooves.

These were documented in England by the 1600s and were widespread by the mid-1700s. They became popular in England as ornamental, or “park” sheep. Jacobs were ideal for this role, as they were picturesque but required minimal care. Scant selection occurred for anything but hardiness, spots, and four horns. The result was a primitive breed that looked after itself well.

It is that time of year !!

The Dutch Hookbill or Hookbill Duck -

Old text suggests they originated in Asia, but were developed further. They were kept extensively in Holland on the canals, where they were let out in the morning (and would fly off) to feed and would return at night to be shut in. By morning they would provide their keepers with eggs.

One story is that the White-Bibbed Hookbill were bred to make them easily identifiable and visible to hunters while hunting for wild Mallards. There has not been any old texts, that we are aware of, that back this story up but still very interesting.
