Useful advice from enjoy2swim.....
The benefits to cold water swimming are well documented, but sometimes we have a gentle reminder that even with the natural beauty of the sea, it can still be dangerous you should always feel 100% before taking to the water.
We have had a reminder this week by Gary McGurty who was still recovering from a bad cold , collapsed on the beach at Beauport Bay, he is now urging others to be aware of the symptoms and dangers of hypothermia when deciding to go for a dip in the sea this winter and always go in with friends .
If you're participating in 30 Bays in 30 Days's 12 Bays of Christmas this December, follow these top tips for staying safe in the cold water.
1️⃣ Acclimatise by entering the water slowly so that your body can get used to the cold
2️⃣ Swim with someone or tell someone on shore your plans
3️⃣ Use a tow float to make you more visible in the water and as an extra flotation aid should you start to get tired
4️⃣ Know your limits, as cold water can seriously impact your ability to swim
5️⃣ Dry off quickly and get warm without heating your body up too quickly
