This week is 'Mental Health Awareness Week' and at Orchid we always want to encourage great mental health for those that we care for, their families members and our team of carers.

Here are our top tips for a healthy and positive mindset:

Get outside - As the weather begins to warm up, going for regular walks or taking loved ones who are less able into nature, will have a great impact on their mental wellbeing. Being outside increases our exposure to sunlight which heightens our vitamin D intake and contributes to feeling more energised.

Make sure you're getting enough sleep - Sleep has a great impact on our mood and if we aren't rested we can feel stressed and tired. Technology and environment has a large influence on our sleep patterns, so avoid watching TV or being on your phone in bed, instead read or listen to an audio book.

Connect with others - Regular social meet-up's with friends engages our minds and releases oxytocin leading to reduced stress levels and a positive outlook. This also applies to spending regular time with family, arranging monthly get-togethers can help the elderly to feel involved and helps for them to be around children, engaging their imagination which improves focus and memory.

Never stop learning - Creativity is one way to keeping a calm and healthy mind. This can include playing cards, doing suduko or crosswords, painting, reading, learning a new language, sport or hobby or simply practising meditation. Once you find a creative outlet which you enjoy, share it with others and encourage them to join in.

Spending time with animals - Animals are great a creating a healthy lifestyle and mindset. They get us outdoors and keep us active, provide companionship if you live alone, make us feel loved and above all bring joy to our lives. If you have a pet and a friend or loved one doesn't, invite them on a walk with you or to sit in the garden with a cup of tea whilst your pet plays or relaxes alongside you.

On days like today it's incredibly difficult to keep cool.

For the elderly, it's even more important for them to seek shade and beat the heat.

Here are our top tips to help keeping your loved ones cool this summer:

⚪ Keep windows open and curtains or blinds partly closed so rooms are getting plenty of ventilation.

⚪ Keep as hydrated as possible. Place water bottles within their reach so they can easily access them throughout the day.

⚪ Avoid taking trips outside during the middle of the day. If they wish to go outside, early in the morning or early evening is best when it's much cooler.

⚪ Finally keep their fridge stocked with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Easy to eat snacks such as watermelon and cucumber are great for replenishing water intake.

Did you know that this week is Loneliness Awareness Week?

Many people experience loneliness, despite having family and friends around them. But loneliness stems from a lack of connection when we socialize or interact with others, or from simply spending not enough time with people.

So much about what we do at Orchid is about spending time with our clients, whether this be watching their favourite TV programme with them, taking them for a walk or simply sit in their garden with them and chat over a cup of tea.

We are that reliable source to make them feel connected, rewarded and understood.
