Sweet Nobodyの7インチシングル『Five Star Diary』が本日ついにリリース！前回のポストではサウンドや収録曲について解説しましたが、今回はバンドのバイオグラフィーを紹介しましょう。メンバーは、リードシンガーでありソングライター Joy Deyoと、ドラマー Brian Dishonの夫婦、そしてギターのCasey Snyder、ベースのAdam Nolanという4人。2017年に1stアルバム『Loud Songs For Quiet People』をリリースし、リードシングル「Manner Of Speaking」はYouTubeドラマ"Youth & Consequences"の主題歌に起用。その後、パンデミック前に録音され、当初2020年夏予定だった2ndアルバム『We're Trying Our Best』のリリースは2021年9月まで待たねばなりませんでしたが、困難や葛藤を抱えながら現実を生きることにテーマが向けられた同作は、奇しくも時代と呼応するタイミングでリスナーに届けられました。この7インチのタイトル曲も眩いばかりのポップサウンドを聴かせる一方で、Joyが遺伝性の持病であるエーラスダンロス症候群と闘う経験が歌われているという二面性を持つ珠玉のポップチューンに仕上がっています。

Sweet Nobody's 7" single "Five Star Diary" is finally out today! In the previous post we described their sound and the tracks on it, now we will introduce the band's biography. The four members are lead singer and songwriter Joy Deyo and drummer Brian Dishon, who are a married couple, plus guitarist Casey Snyder and bassist Adam Nolan. In 2017, they released 1st album "Loud Songs For Quiet People", and the lead single "Manner Of Speaking" became the theme song for the YouTube drama "Youth & Consequences". Subsequently, the release of 2nd Album "We're Trying Our Best" that is recorded before the pandemic and originally scheduled for 2020 summer had to wait until September 2021. But the album, which focused on the reality of living with difficulties and struggles, was delivered to listeners at a timing that coincided with the times strangely. The title track of this 7" is another pop gem with a sparkly pop sound, but it is also a song that tells Joy's experience of struggling with a chronic genetic illness, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

本日、2月14日リリースとなるJuniperの12インチLP『Juniper』のプレオーダーがスタートしました。Lazyperfectionからのバレンタインギフトとも言える本作は、これまでになく語るべきことが多いため、もしあなたがインディーロックファンならこの長文のポストを素通りしないことをオススメします。

現在17歳のアーティスト Juniper Shelleyは、物心ついたときから歌い続けているという。Teenage FanclubのFrancis Macdonaldとのユニット Cheeky Monkeyでの活動のほか、ソロとして5枚のアルバムリリース、少年ナイフのツアーサポート経験を持つベテランのシンガーソングライターであり、老舗ラジオ局WFMUのDJを長年務めるMichael Shelley、その愛娘こそが彼女である。

2020年6月、当時15歳という若さでリリースされた本作は、あどけなさが残る無垢なヴォーカルに乗せて、恋心や友情、クラスメイトにまつわるごく普通の10代の少女の日常が歌われる楽曲と、およそティーンとは不釣り合いな60〜70年代のヴィンテージポップに根差した巧みなバンドアンサンブルとの折衷が、まず聴く者を驚かせ、やがて10代への共感とは疎遠になった大人さえも夢中にさせる類い稀な作品だ。

それもそのはず、参加ミュージシャンとして名を連ねるのは、プロデューサーを兼任する父Michaelに加え、Chris Collingwood（Fountains of Wayne）、Chris Geddes（Belle and Sebastian）、Ira Kaplan（Yo La Tengo）ら、パワーポップ〜インディーロックシーンの辣腕ミュージシャンたち。Juniper自身もオルガン、フルートを演奏するほか、アルバムの楽曲の多くをMichaelと共作し、彼女ならではの音楽的ビジョンを映し出している。

“私の音楽の好みは、家族の音楽と友達の音楽のマッシュアップだと思う。The Beach Boys、The Zombies、Fountains of Wayneがすごく好きだけど、Taylor Swiftも大好きよ”と彼女は言う。また、マスタリングは数々の名盤を世に送り出してきたニューヨークの名門スタジオ Sterling Soundにて行われており、サウンドクオリティーも申し分ない。

Now seventeen-year-old Juniper Shelley has been singing for as long as she (or anyone) can remember. She is the beloved daughter of Michael Shelley, a seasoned singer-songwriter and longtime DJ for the legendary WFMU radio station, who has worked with Francis Macdonald of Teenage Fanclub as Cheeky Monkey, released five solo albums, and even opened for Shonen Knife on tour.

This album originally released in June 2020 when she was only fifteen, is a truly exceptional piece, surprising listeners first and eventually hooking even adults who have lost sympathy for teenagers, with its mixture of songs describing the everyday life of an ordinary teenage girl about love, friendship, and classmates with innocent vocals, and a skillful ensemble rooted in 60s to 70s vintage pop which is unsuitable for teenagers.

It's no wonder. The musician credits include her dad Michael who also served as producer, Chris Collingwood from Fountains of Wayne, Chris Geddes from Belle and Sebastian, Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo, and other talented players in Power-Pop, Indie Rock scenes. Juniper herself played organ and flute, and co-wrote many of the album's songs with Michael, reflecting her distinctive musical vision.

"I guess that my musical taste is a mashup of my family's music and my friends' music," she says. "I really like the Beach Boys, the Zombies and Fountains of Wayne, but I also love Taylor Swift." Also, the album was mastered at Sterling Sound, a prestigious studio in New York that has produced countless masterpieces, so there is no doubt about the sound.

Now, the Japan edition LP of the debut album created with such great collaborators has been finally unveiled as a deluxe edition featuring pink-colored vinyl, all-pink outer sleeves, and inner sleeves with full lyrics and stunning photos!
