The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) acknowledges the Government of Japanโ€™s generous contributions under three projects that provided emergency assistance for the stabilization of food-insecure people in the flood-affected areas of Pakistan, implemented in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

WFP organised a Project Completion ceremony to recognize the vital contributions of USD 7.2 million (USD 3.7 million, USD 2.5 million and USD 1 million) from the Government of Japan to address the critical needs of 246,000 people affected by the unprecedented 2022 floods in Pakistan. The USD 2.5 million enabled WFP to provide emergency food assistance to flood-affected communities, ensuring their immediate food security and nutrition needs in 2022, while the USD 3.7 million and USD 1 million contributions helped WFP to deliver nutritionally balanced food every month to those actively involved in community rehabilitation, livelihood and resilience building initiatives and identified through district-level consultations in 2023. The USD 3.7 million grant also supported conditional cash assistance during the early recovery phase. Furthermore, tailored capacity-building activities were implemented to enhance local skills in disaster risk reduction, climate-smart agriculture, food production and storage, and other marketable skills.

The ceremony took place at the WFP Country office in Islamabad in the presence of Ms. Coco Ushiyama, WFP Country Director in Pakistan, H.E. Wada Mitsuhiro, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, along with senior Japan Embassy and National Disaster Management Authority officials.

Speaking at the occasion, H.E. Mr Wada, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, appreciated WFPโ€™s Pakistan work and reaffirmed Japanโ€™s commitment by noting โ€œFood security and nutrition are among the priorities for Japanese Official Development Assistance, and we consider them to be the fundamental requirements for achieving sustainable development.โ€

โ€œWe greatly appreciate the unwavering support provided by the Government of Japan, which enabled us to address food insecurity and rebuild livelihoods in flood-affected areas at a critical timeโ€, said Ms. Coco Ushiyama, Country Director of WFP Pakistan.
In 2023, Pakistan continued to grapple with the compounding impact of the devastating 2022 floods that affected more than one-third of the country. WFP played a pivotal role in supporting nearly 4.4 million people following the flood crisis through a variety of complementary interventions to address both critical and immediate humanitarian needs through unconditional cash support to approximately 1.7 million people in 2023 and longer-term needs to build resilience, enhance livelihoods opportunities, and address malnutrition.

Overall, with generous and timely support from donors and partners including this USD 7.2 million from Japan, WFP successfully mobilized over USD 150 million for its emergency flood response by December 2023.

WHO Pakistan capped off a successful project with a ceremony thanking Japan for their vital support. Held at the WHO Islamabad Office, the event celebrated the "Rebuilding Together" initiative that revitalized healthcare infrastructure in flood-stricken areas. Japan's Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Ambassador Mr. Wada Mitsuhiro, and other dignitaries joined to celebrate the successful completion of the Project.

The devastating monsoon rains that struck Pakistan between mid-July and mid-August 2022 resulted in unprecedented flooding, impacting millions of lives across Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh provinces. Over 600,000 people were displaced, 1.9 million houses damaged, and extensive agricultural losses incurred. The healthcare infrastructure was severely affected, with over 2,000 health facilities damaged. The financial assistance from the government and the people of Japan enabled WHO to timely respond to communicable disease outbreaks and enhance access to essential healthcare through revitalization of damaged healthcare facilities.

In a collaborative effort to strengthen healthcare delivery in Pakistan, WHO has renovated 462 healthcare facilities and provided them with essential equipment and supplies of which 240 have been rehabilitated through Japanโ€™s assistance. These facilities are now managed by the government health authorities, ensuring continued service provision. To empower local healthcare professionals for long-term sustainability, WHO has also invested in capacity building of service providers in various aspects of healthcare delivery including disease surveillance and outbreak response.

Dr Luo Dapeng, WHO Representative and Head of Mission in Pakistan, in his welcome remarks, acknowledged the remarkable support by the government and people of Japan stating โ€œWe are extremely grateful for the invaluable support from the Government and people of Japan. Their generous contribution has been instrumental in restoring access to essential healthcare for vulnerable communities affected by the floods. This collaborative effort exemplifies the importance of international partnerships in building resilient healthcare systems.โ€

His Excellency Ambassador Mr. Wada Mitsuhiro appreciated WHO Pakistanโ€™s work and support to the government of Pakistan, noting that โ€œThe government of Japan is committed to โ€œLeave No Oneโ€™s Health Behindโ€ towards achieving the Universal health Coverage. Global Health is central to Japanโ€™s Development Cooperation, and we consider it to be the fundamental pillar of sustainable development.โ€

WHO Pakistan remains committed to working alongside the Pakistani government and other stakeholders to further strengthen the country's healthcare infrastructure.

Embarking on a journey to study in Japan under the prestigious MEXT scholarship program was a dream come true for me. Inspired by the resilience and ethics of Japanese professionals, I was determined to conduct research on Japanese workplaces as a part of my PhD degree specializing in HRM and Organizational Behavior. The scholarship application process was both rewarding and transformative, propelling me into a realm of professional growth even before setting foot in Japan.

Upon arrival, I was greeted with unparalleled support that eased my transition into Japanese culture and academia. With language barriers already being addressed through comprehensive language courses and cultural immersion activities as a part of the MEXT scholarship, I could fully focus on my studies and research. Making friends with locals, indulging in delicious healthy cuisines, and exploring Japan's rich heritage were just a few highlights of my immersive experience.

During my research journey, guided by my Japanese Supervisorโ€™s motto "Festina Lente," which translates to "make haste slowly," I uncovered fascinating insights into the quality of work life among different generations in Japanese workplaces. Notably, the expectations and perceptions of younger employees, such as millennials or Satori sedai, shed light on evolving workplace dynamics. Armed with these insights, I returned to Pakistan, where doors to new career opportunities swung open.

The blend of tradition and modernity inherent in Japanese education uniquely positioned me in the Pakistani job market. Offers from leading universities and industries poured in, reflecting the recognition and value accorded to a degree from Japan. Drawing on my experiences and research findings, I have embarked on a path of professional growth and development, seamlessly integrating Japanese wisdom into my endeavors in Pakistan. I routinely incorporate various Japanese business practices such as Nemawashi (building consensus) and Genba (being present on the actual locale), Omotenashi (hospitality & customer service) to name a few, into my lectures.

My journey from Japan to Pakistan exemplifies the transformative power of international education and cross-cultural experiences. As I continue to navigate the professional landscape, I carry with me the invaluable lessons learned in the Land of the Rising Sun, enriching my career and contributing to the advancement of my field in Pakistan.

Assalam-o-alaikum, Hi everyone, ใ“ใ‚“ใซใกใฏ็š†ใ•ใ‚“

I am more than happy to share my experience in Japan with you all.
My name is Rimsha Shakeel and I was lucky enough to come to Japan in April 2023 through the MEXT scholarship Embassy Track in order to pursue my PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at Kobe University. The whole process was smooth and guidance was given professionally to the aspiring candidates. The selection process is quite detailed and rigorous. Hence, I encourage all the applicants to follow the procedure properly and prepare documents accordingly.

When I arrived in Japan, even though it was my first international travel everything was quite manageable. The Japanese staff at the airport were welcoming, which kind of eased the anxiety I had about landing in a new country with a language I didnโ€™t know. I used Google Maps to navigate and find the university campus on my first day which was not so helpful because of complicated train systems. I ended up getting lost so many times. However, when I asked locals for directions in my broken Japanese Language, not only did they es**rt me to the right platform, but they also appreciated my Japanese language ability. I was also one of the few lucky students who got candies as a gift from locals on my first day. So, I hope you can imagine how super friendly, appreciative, and helpful everyone is here. This will help you overcome the anxious thoughts you will normally have when you travel to a new country.

My university, helped me a lot and was kind enough to reply to me in detail and in a kind manner whenever I had an issue no matter how minor. Most of the campuses have English-speaking staff but in case if there is a campus where Japanese is the main mode of communication, you will not feel left out as they try their best to explain the students all of the procedures and take responsibility for the students professionally, that was the case in my Health Sciences Campus of Kobe University. If you come to Japan as a student, be ready there is going to be a lot of paperwork, in the ward office, post office, bank, etc. All these forms in Japanese make the task daunting. However, up until now, I did not have any issues with any procedure because of support from the university and the positive attitude of locals towards us.

Regarding homesickness, it happens sometimes, especially in a quiet country like Japan. However, many support programs on Campus and Off Campus can support your stay in Japan. Also, HALAL food is a big issue at the beginning when you arrive here but slowly you start to find the appropriate food for you. The best thing about Japan, this country is tolerant towards the needs of people from different backgrounds and takes care of that. For example, I participated in an evacuation drill and a nutritionist came to me to ask about the food that I could not eat. This was something I was impressed with. You just need to tell them the ingredients you cannot eat and they try their best to find out the food appropriate for you. This happened to me every time I asked about the ingredients in my daily life in Japan as well for example in movie theaters, restaurants, convenience stores, etc. I was never discouraged by any locals for asking such types of questions.

Regarding future career plans, I believe that to make the most out of your experience in Japan. One should learn the language. Hence right now I am focusing on learning the Japanese Language and completing my degree successfully.
I wish you all good luck!

The Embassy held a GGP briefing session on Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project (GGP) on 25th April at the Embassy of Japan. The session was attended by 54 participants from 30 organizations.

While speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kawamura, Counsellor, Head of the Economic and Development section welcomed the participants and said, โ€œThis year marks 70th anniversary of the start of Japanโ€™s ODA to Pakistan in1954. Over the years, Japan has supported Pakistanโ€™s developmentโ€. He also emphasized that a state-centered approach was not enough and there is a need to focus on the individual person, protecting them from threats to their survival and help them achieve their individual independence and full potential. And this cannot be done without cooperation of the people who are well aware of the situation at the grassroots level, just like the GGP participants.

Through a detailed orientation by Advisor to GGP, Mr. Shoaib Safeer, the participants learnt about GGP criteria and submission procedure. This was followed by presentations from Friends Welfare Association and Saibaan Development Organization who shared their GGP experiences. At the end, there was an informative and lively Q&A session. Overall, it was a constructive and meaningful meeting with different organizations from diverse backgrounds.

The GGP team is thankful to all the participants and looking forward to receiving GGP application.
