KAREU MPYA CBO is an acronym for Kenya Agriculture Reforms Elgon United (KAREU)
Managing Programmes for Youth in Agriculture (MPYA) Community Based Organization (CBO).
In responding to Climate Change mitigation and adaptation as well as non-violent resolution of natural resource-based conflicts, we hosted a forum for the climate change grassroot leaders in Chepkube, Cheptais Sub-County.
The forum supported by Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia and Act Change Transform through the Resilience, Peace and Stability (RPS) program offered environmental capacity building to participants on adaptation and mitigation of climate change and smart agroforestry techniques.
Mt. Elgon ecosystem has witnessed loss of forest cover in the recent years and community response is highly needed to safeguard its future.
Vulnerable and Special Interest Group especially those abled differently (PWDs) should be meaningfully engaged in matters of national building including implementation of NADCO Report.
In Mt. Elgon Sub-County, the PWDs have challenged those in authorities and leadership to promote inclusive governance and hearing their voices in order to at a meeting held in Kaptama by Kareu Mpya CBO with support of USAID Kenya and Act Change Transform through Kenya Electoral Conflicts Mitigation and Civic Education Support Program (ECCES).
Special interest groups including People Abled Differently (PWDs) have a right to fair representation, their voices & inputs heard and acted upon including meaningful engagement in the NADCO Report. This will promote inclusion and ensure we in the New 🇰🇪.
In support of this inclusion, we hosted a media engagement with special interest groups in Cheptais Sub-County on implementation and the place of the vulnerable.
The participants called for meaningful engagement in Public Participation, noting that they are often ignored and relegated.
"Sometimes we are called for formality into meetings and our voices, inputs not fully acted upon. It's time our issues are taken seriously so that we are not left behind," said Ben Wekesa, PWDs Official in Cheptais Sub-County.
The participants resolved to draft a petition & framework to engage those in leadership to have them heard even as implementation of the Report is pending.

The implementation of the and the IEBC Boundaries Review gains debate from the residents of TransNzoia and Bungoma facilitated by KAREU MPYA.
On Thursday, we led media advocacy engagement on NADCO Report in Kitale bringing together religious leaders, elders, youth, women and PWDs.
The event was hosted under the Kenya Electoral Mitigation and Civic Education Support Program (ECCES) funded by USAID Kenya through Act Change Transform .

Today, through support of USAID Kenya and Act Change Transform , we held and in TransNzoia County.
The media advocacy and community discussion offers proactive preparation on the implementation of the Report that is before the Parliament.
Among other recommendations, the state of Marginalization of the Sabaot Community in TransNzoia, Bungoma Counties and other communities, which the National Cohesion and Integration Commission been given a mandate to determine, set to present their views on the marginalization and County Boundaries.
In the forum, the leaders have asked Parliament of Kenya to fast track the reconstitution of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) Selection panel and trigger the appointment of Commissioners.
"Lack of IEBC commissioners and politricks has prolonged boundaries review beyond constitutional timeline," They said.
The Participants further called for community inclusion that caters for other minority communities within the counties including women, youth and PWDs.
The service providers including leaders have the cardinal role in promoting inclusivity in appointments, sharing of resources and opportunities in areas with diverse communities to address issues of Marginalization and political related conflicts, according to participants.
The event was convened under the USAID Kenya's Kenya Electoral Mitigation and Civic Education Support Program (ECCES).

With Mt. Elgon residents anxiously waiting for the conclusion of the Boundary Delimitation Process and implementation of the , we conducted a media engagement on the report and the anticipation of the NCIC Investigations on the state of marginalization of Sabaot community in both TransNzoia and Bungoma Counties as recommended in the report.
In the meeting, the role of citizens in civic education, submission of memoranda &collection of views was underscored as crucial and called for proactivity as IEBC Commissioners remain pending.
Further, women and youth were challenged to rise above sympathy for positions and instead be bold, come forward and unleash leadership characters and take the space in meaningful governance. This, according to former DG Hillary Chongwony, begins with active participation in political conversation such as the boundaries review.
They also appreciated Kareu Mpya and partners for the knowledge and sharing of information to understand the legal process of boundaries delimitation and constant empowerment for women, youth and PWDs.
The meeting was enabled by the support of USAID Kenya and Act Change Transform through the Kenya Electoral Conflicts Mitigation and Civic Education Support Program (ECCES).

We learnt the untimely demise of Israel with profound sadness and disbelief. He has been conspicuously present in almost all our activities for peace and environment not just in Kopsiro Sub-County but Mt. Elgon at large.
Last year, in a bit to structure peaceful coexistence among and between other communities in Kopsiro, he spearheaded the registration of Chepyuk Chomyeet CBO to advance the peace and environment agenda.
Through his outstanding contribution via 🌲Friends of Mt Elgon Forest🌱 , Mantey participated in planting and growing of trees in Cheptais and Kopsiro Sub-Counties including communities and institutions.
His valuable contribution to peace, environment and education (as PTA Chairman in Cheptais High School) will greatly be missed.

The forum shared the recommendation of the Report currently before the August House which, among others, seeks to consider the issues of Marginalization of the Sabaot Community and boundaries review of the elective units in both TransNzoia and Bungoma Counties.
The forum brings together community representatives including elders, women, youth & people abled differently. In the two forums held yesterday in Kaptama & Today in Saboti, the residents welcome the recommendations with the hope that it comes to reality.
The program is supported and funded by USAID Kenya thru' Act Change Transform with the aim of promoting peaceful coexistence among communities with divergent political and social differences- which are often recipes for political related conflicts.

As part of our continuous mentorship in capacity-building to other groups, we hosted the Kapakateny Youth Bunge team who paid us a visit to learn more about proposal writing and voicing out issues affecting the community.
The team, who have benefited from our Program supported by USAID Kenya and Act Change Transform recently brokered peace and understanding conflict in Kapkateny Ward over the location of the Ward Office.
According to Prisca Odera, the Secretary of the Group, Program through KAREU MPYA has given them the knowledge and confidence to voice out issues and following due process on matters of concern.

The team were in office as follow up following the sentization forum on access to affirmative action funds that we held in February as they seek to gain understanding of proposal writing and strategic planning of their group.
Mt Elgon residents have, over the years, actively participated on forums that seek to expand political representation, hence their active participation during the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO).
With the NADCO report out, we conducted 2 NADCO report community dissemination and feedback forums in Cheptais and Kopsiro Sub-Counties as we wait for the Parliamentary discussions and implementation.

Vulnerable Groups Receive Training On How To Apply For Government Funds - CEO AFRICA By Isabella Maua Youth, women, and people living with disabilities from Mt. Elgon Sub County have been challenged to take advantage of affirmative action funds to leverage poverty eradication in the region. READ ALSO... Access to information on affirmative action funds is crucial for its increased uptake across Mt. Elgon Region. This will, in return, allow youth, women and people abled differently to start and/or expand their ventures.
To support the residents, we held our 3rd "Ngumzo Mtaani" Bunge-led conversations on political conflict and access to affirmative action funds with the small groups representatives in Mt. Elgon Sub-County. They included Bodaboda, women and youth groups as well as PWDs.
In the event, Kenya Youth Enterprise Development Fund representative Mr. Ronald Wachie outlined steps and requirements for youth, individually or in groups, on how to apply and access the funds- while urging youth to be proactive and intentional for growth in their enterprises.
Mt. Elgon Sub-County Women Enterprise Fund Officer Jamin Tumwa, present, challenged the women groups to utilize the digital access to the Fund and encouraged timely repayment to allow them have a better credit score.
"As a fund, the top agenda is to train women on entrepreneurship and money handling. Thereafter, they can access the fund for their business. " Tumwa said. He further urged women to utilize the fund.
Mt. Elgon Sub-County Social Development Officer Mr. Albert Mung'ou implored the leaders and participants to correctly update their memberships, renew their certificates and comply with the necessary statutory requirements so as not to create a mountain while requesting for any funds.
KAREU MPYA CEO Emmanuel Masake challenged participants to change their attitudes towards the fund & types of enterprises that can offer better returns over time.
"Before you apply for any fund, plan how to spend and on which project. Have a +ve attitude and you will succeed" Masake added.

The youth, women and people living with disabilities have decried lack of political and leadership accountability especially when seeking affirmative action funds to expand their enterprises.
While hosting a Gumzo Mtaani Youth Bunge led conversations on political accountability and linkages to affirmative action funds in Kapkateny, the participants pointed out lack of transparency and access to information.
"Cases of pre-kickbacks of resources before accessing the funds exposes it to the highest bidders and often those who deserve, miss out," they said.
KAREU MPYA shared with them the art of proposal writing, business plan and understanding procedures that can have an impact on access to funds.
The participants formed committees to draft proposals and make due diligence in expanding their enterprises and entrench the art of saving both individual and Collective as groups they belong to.

With the standards of living going up and employment remaining elusive, young people find themselves clinging on political elites for favours and often misused and abused. They instead cause political conflict in the community.
To bridge this gap, KAREU MPYA facilitated a ‘Gumzo Mtaani’ youth Bunge_led conversations on political accountability& linkages to affirmative action funds to turn their business ideas into tangible enterprises to youth representative in Cheptais.
"KAREU support Youth Bunge led conversations on access to affirmative funds to empower youth,PwDs, women & remove push and pull factors to electoral conflicts and develop enterprises that makes you self-dependence," Said Emmanuel Masake, CEO KAREU MPYA.
The participants came up with actions on how they can enhance their positive role in the community, participate in county & national governments decision making process and engage with political leaders especially on issues that affect them & access to opportunities and savings.

The event stressed on groups income generating activities (IGA) and proper record keeping as well as goals in business.

In celebrating , we joined residents of Cheptais & Kopsiro Sub-Counties where we supported youth football to promote peace during this festive season.
We also urged youth to shun the criminal acts and safeguard their health by being each other's keeper.
Cheptais DCC Peter Kalume, who presided over celebrations urged residents to cooperate with the government to reduce and GBV in the region.
"We will win the war on SGBV and Teenage Pregnancies if we work together to arrest the culprits," he said.
He also urged residents to be aware of the government directive banning all the forest activities to mitigate effects of climate change and avoid confrontation with security agencies implementing the directive.
Kareu Mpya on the other hand asked residents to maintain and make good use of its ecosystem to make the region food secure, promote education for their children and sustainable livelihoods for all.
