I crave real friendship. The kind of friendship that has space for bad days, unfiltered thoughts, and big feelings. The kind where we share stuff and know each other. Like really know each other.

I don’t know, I just don’t have a whole lot of energy for friendships that are stuck in the shallows. It doesn’t mean I don’t like those people. It doesn’t mean I don’t think they’re great and that there’s not a space for acquaintances because there is, but my heart is with the ones who hold my messy, my imperfect, and my broken. My heart is with the ones who walk into the room, throw themselves on the couch, and let me know what they’re wrestling with today, in this moment, right now. Nobody pretends. Nobody tiptoes. Nobody feels the need to be something they’re not.

I don’t want to “play” friendship, I want the FRIENDSHIP—the actual friendship.

I don’t want to guess how you feel about me. I don’t want constantly be trying to earn your approval or to convince you to like me. I don’t want to have a deep conversation one day and then turn around and talk about Lululemon leggings or the weather the next. I want to breathe. Maybe I’m just old and tired and cranky, I don’t know. Maybe I’ve been through too much at this point, or maybe I’m working so hard in every other area just to be “enough” that I need a space to relax and simply be. No measuring up. No proving myself. Just being.

I know not every friendship will get to this level. In fact, I know not many friendships will get to this level. It takes time and energy and a whole lot of intentionality and trust to get there. These kind of relationships are sacred, but honestly, I’m not in high school anymore. I can’t afford to throw myself around and invest in any and everything, so that’s what I save my heart, my best, my real, my secrets, my most authentic, tender self for—the sacred.
