COMMANDER KENYA ARMY VISITS TROOPS SERVING UNDER MONUSCO IN DRC
The Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General David Tarus visited Kenyan troops serving under the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). The visit was aimed at strengthening the partnership between Kenya and MONUSCO forces in promoting peace and stability in the region as well as boosting the morale of the troops.
The visit commenced with a courtesy call at the Force Headquarters in Goma, where Lieutenant General Tarus was received by the MONUSCO Acting Commander Major General Khar Diouf. During his meeting with the Force Headquarters personnel, discussions centered on the ongoing collaboration between Kenya and MONUSCO forces in promoting peace and stability in the region.
Later on the day, Lieutenant General Tarus visited the Kenya Signal Company based at Himbi, where he interacted with the troops and commended them for their dedication and professionalism in executing their duties. He emphasized the importance of effective communication in military operations and praised the Signal Company for their crucial role in ensuring seamless communication within the mission.
On the second day of his visit, Lieutenant General Tarus proceeded to the northern part of Eastern DRC where he began by paying a courtesy call at the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) Headquarters. The discussions at the FIB Headquarters focused on the strategic objectives of the mission and the collective efforts required to address security challenges in the region.
Subsequently , Lieutenant General Tarus visited the Kenyan Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF) troops, where he expressed his appreciation for their commitment and bravery in serving on the frontlines of the mission. He lauded the KENQRF troops for their swift response to emergencies and their unwavering dedication to maintaining peace and security in the region.

PRESIDENT RUTO COMMISSIONS KEROKA LEVEL IV HOSPITAL CONSTRUCTED BY KDF
The President of the Republic of Kenya, His Excellency Dr. William Ruto today commissioned the the upgraded Keroka Level IV Hospital refurbished and equipped by the Ministry of Defence - Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
The scope of work for the project aimed to upgrade the facility to a Level IV hospital by constructing an ultramodern three-story building. This building includes an outpatient department, an accident and emergency section, two operating theaters, and separate male and female surgical and medical wards. Additionally, a two-story building housing the administration block and a mother and child unit was constructed. Other works included the construction of a modern morgue and an incinerator.
Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru, who was in the company of other military officials, showcased the works done and equipment installed at the hospital.
This is in line with the mandate of the Kenya Defence Forces under Article 241 (3) (b) of the Constitution, which obligates the military to assist and cooperate with other authorities. KDF continues to participate in national development in an efficient, effective, and adhering to prudent use of public resources.
The facility is among a variety of other hospital projects the military is undertaking across the country in line with the government’s agenda of attaining Universal Health Coverage.
Following the tour of the facility, the President directed the Ministry of Defence to construct a perimeter wall around the Keroka health facility and the County Government to provide a fully equipped ambulance to enhance the hospital’s emergency response capabilities.

KIBOKO PRIMARY AND JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL VISIT KENYA NAVY FLEET, MTONGWE
Pupils and students from Kiboko Primary and Junior Secondary School in Makueni County visited Kenya Navy Fleet (KNF), Mtongwe for an educational tour.
The group was welcomed at the KNF and boarded the Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) JASIRI where they received a briefing on the ship’s mission, capabilities and operational significance.
During the visit, the students explored the vessel and observed its advanced navigation and communication systems. This experience provided them with valuable insights into the ship's role in managing and executing missions.
The highlight of the tour was the opportunity to interact with the ship’s personnel through a question and answer session, offering the learners a deeper understanding of naval life and the challenges faced at sea.

ADVANCING ETHICS AND ANTI-CORRUPTION MEASURES
Mr. Twalib Mbarak, the Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), paid a courtesy call to the CDF Gen Charles Kahariri at the Defence Headquarters today, Thursday 01 Aug 24.
During the meeting, they discussed how KDF inculcates anti-corruption measures and sustains a culture of ethical standards. The two leaders acknowledged that these are critical values to ensure the military remains accountable and professional in the fulfilment of the KDF mandate.
To build on existing ethics and anti corruption measures, EACC was invited to work closely with KDF, especially to curb recruitment malpractices.

MAJOR GENERAL PETER KARIUKI
The command responsibility pull-through after 1982 coup went all the way to the service Commander
After the mutiny by his soldiers had been quelled, Major General Kariuki was soon thereafter arrested and confined for some time at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, Nairobi.
Subsequently he was transferred to Naivasha Maximum Security Prison where he was held in solitary confinement for 147 days.
On 10th January, 1983, the he appeared before a court martial and was charged with the offences of;
(1) failing to prevent a mutiny contrary to section 26(a) of the Armed Forces Act, cap 199 Laws of Kenya (now repealed), and
(2) failing to suppress a mutiny, contrary to the same provision.
The court martial was presided over by Major General Lenges, with F. E. Aragon, then a Senior Resident magistrate, as the Judge Advocate.
On 18th January, 1983, the court martial convicted the service commander of the two offences and sentenced him to four years imprisonment, the sentences to run concurrently.
In addition, he was dismissed from the Kenya Armed Forces and stripped of his rank, benefits, medals and decorations. Kenya Defence Forces KDF warriors

INVESTITURE CEREMONY FOR NEWLY PROMOTED SENIOR NAVAL OFFICERS
The Commander Kenya Navy Major General Paul Otieno on 29 July 2024 presided over the investiture of ranks ceremony to the newly promoted Senior Naval Officers at the Kenya Navy Headquarters in Mtongwe, Mombasa.
The ceremony was conducted in accordance with the naval traditions following the promotions and appointments made by the Defence Council.
Some of the senior Kenya Navy officers who were promoted and appointed to new leadership roles include Brigadier Abraham Kipchirchir Biwott who was promoted and appointed Commander Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe (KNB MTG); Brigadier Mohamed Shee Shemote who was promoted and appointed Commander Kenya Navy Fleet (KNF); Brigadier Lazarus Patroba Wafula who was promoted and appointed Commander Kenya Navy Base Manda (KNB Manda) among other senior officers who received various appointments.
Maj Gen Paul Otieno congratulated the senior officers on their promotion and stated that elevation comes with increased responsibility.
"I applaud you for your outstanding voyage of progression within the hierarchies, showcasing your preparedness for the responsibilities that await. Your steadfast devotion and resolute dedication are a testament to the exceptional duty you have provided to our nation. I congratulate each of you for your exemplary contributions and unwavering allegiance to our shared mission," said Maj Gen Paul Otieno.
Present during the event was the newly appointed Deputy Commander Kenya Navy Brigadier John Sankale Kiswaa, principal staff officers, senior officers, and officers.

GITHUNGURI LEVEL FIVE HOSPITAL CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY: A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BY MOD AND MOH
The Principal Secretary Ministry of Defence (MoD), Dr. Patrick Mariru, along with the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Medical Services at the Ministry of Health (MoH), Mr. Harry Kimtai, conducted a site visit and inspection of the proposed Githunguri Level Five Hospital in Kiambu. They were welcomed by Kiambu County Commissioner, Mr. Duncan Darusi, before proceeding to the construction site accompanied by local leaders, led by Githunguri MP Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba.
The Ministry of Defence is overseeing the construction of this hospital, which aims to significantly improve access to medical services for the local and surrounding communities.
During the visit, Dr. Mariru reaffirmed MoD's commitment to ensuring the quality and timely completion of the project in readiness to serve the community.
Honorable Gathoni Wamuchomba expressed her gratitude to both the MoD and MoH for their unwavering support and dedication to the hospital's construction. She highlighted the hospital's potential to greatly benefit the local community, both in terms of healthcare and economic growth. Hon. Wamuchomba also pledged her continued support for the project, vowing to collaborate closely with MoD and MoH to see it through to completion.

CDF GEN KAHARIRI HOSTS JAPANESE AMBASSADOR TO KENYA
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri today hosted the Japanese Ambassador to Kenya His Excellency Okaniwa Ken at the Defence Headquarters.
The CDF noted that the two countries share bilateral relations dating back to the 60s and thanked the Government of Japan for the continued support in peace support training at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) in Karen, Nairobi.
He added that through the ‘Proactive Contribution to Peace Policy’, Japan has actively participated in maintaining global peace through legislation for peace and security.
Through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Kenya has registered developmental projects such as the construction of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone, expansion of Moi International Airport, Mombasa Port Container Terminal as well as the construction of bridges in Nyali, Mtwapa and Kilifi.
Ambassador Ken underscored the value of Kenya - Japan relations, indicating that he looks forward to strengthening the established defence relations.
Some of the areas considered for possible collaboration include maritime security, information sharing, joint military training, and disaster response.
