Data and Media

The Media Council of Kenya has underscored the role of media in driving data protection awareness and is calling on journalists and media practitioners to uphold ethical guidelines when using data in their coverage.

Media Council of Kenya Director for Media Training and Development Victor Bwire has implored the scribes to familiarise themselves with data protection laws, which he says, will enlighten and enable them to avoid breaching other related laws that might subject them to legal implications..

“Many of the data issues fall within the ambit of the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya. Adherence to the Code and data protection principles remain critical components of enhancing professionalism in the media with regards to data protection”, said Mr Bwire at an editors’ sensitisation forum convened by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in Machakos County today.

“It is in line with this that the Media Council of Kenya has engaged stakeholders in developing media guidelines on AI application, data and social media to ensure appropriate and ethical integration for their use in professional journalism in Kenya”, said Mr Bwire.

Empowering Voices: The Media Council of Kenya and Katiba Institute- KI Official have joined forces to train Community Media Journalists on the knacks of reporting Public Interest Stories.

"When doing public interest stories, journalists should be guided by the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya which gives them the mandate on which they operate and protects them from external pressures. A journalist has to tell the truth to protect them from being victimised," Media Council of Kenya Assistant Director, Media Training & Curriculum Development, Christine Nguku.

"The minute you become a journalist and enter the media space, you are bound by the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya. The purpose of the code is to protect journalists,"- Christine Nguku

"A journalist needs to verify any information told verbally to avoid any issues that may arise from its use. Do not publish or air rumors, always make sure to have a source to quote in your story,"- Christine Nguku

"The place of public interest is integral in journalism, it has to do with accountability, transparency and good governance. Therefore, the work of journalists is protected in the law under articles 33,34 and 35 of the Kenyan constitution," Manager, Press Freedom, Safety and Advocacy, Dinnah Ondari

"A journalist can go to any public office to seek information as long as it's in the public interest. The essence of the right to information is that the government does not hold information for itself but on behalf of its citizens," Dinnah Ondari

"Accessibility is key when it comes to access to information and therefore this right is important when it comes to journalism. Seeking information using official channels especially when covering controversial issues can help journalists avoid challenges that may arise from it," noted Dinnah Ondari

Media and the War on Counterfeits: The Media Council of Kenya is urging the media to frame messages around impact as a way of enhancing awareness on counterfeiting Media Council of Kenya CEO David Omwoyo says messages that resonate with the natives “can best drive the point home as locals can easily identify with them”.

“Equally critical is the selection of appropriate brand ambassadors in line with prevailing demographics”, said Mr David Omwoyo when he addressed the session on Effective Communication Strategies and Outreach at the second International Symposium on Intellectual Property and Enforcement (ISSIPE-2) in Nairobi.
He called for proper contextualisation of matters Intellectual Property, saying originality becomes opaque when picked from unfamiliar jurisdictions.

“When running a campaign, contextualisation is key given the complexities around counterfeiting. Appealing to people makes it easy to execute a campaign given that the fight against counterfeits is not just about protecting brands, but it is about protecting consumers, fostering innovation and driving economic growth. This calls for clear communication and awareness”, said Mr David Omwoyo.
