Encouraging Reading at Home
Reading at home can sometimes be tricky for children, especially with lots of modern technology at the disposal of our children. This can derail your school going children away from their books.
Reading should be encouraged to school going children, so that reading does not become a school thing alone, but also children can find interest to read while at home.
Here are some tips we compiled for you to create a reading-friendly environment at home for your children:
1. Designate a Cosy Reading Space: Set up a comfortable and quiet area with good lighting where your child can read without distractions.
2. Stock Up on Books: Keep a variety of books that cater to your child’s interests and reading level. Regularly update the selection to keep it fresh and exciting.
3. Set a Reading Routine: Establish a daily reading time, such as before bed or after dinner, to make reading a consistent habit.
4. Be a Reading Role Model: Show your child that you value reading by reading regularly yourself. Share your favourite books and discuss them.
5. Visit the Library: Make regular trips to the library to explore new books and participate in reading programs or events.
6. Read Aloud Together: Read to your child, regardless of their age. This can help improve their listening skills and make reading a shared activity.
7. Discuss Books: Talk about the books your child is reading. Ask questions and encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions.
8. Incorporate Books into Daily Life: Relate books to your child’s everyday experiences. If they are interested in a particular topic, find books about it.
9. Limit Screen Time: Encourage reading as an alternative to screen time. Create a balance between digital entertainment and reading.
10. Celebrate Reading Milestones: Reward your child for completing books or reaching reading goals with praise or small incentives.
These tips can help foster a love for reading and create a positive reading culture at home.

WHY ARE CERTAIN BOOKS PHASING OUT?
In the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) education system in Kenya, certain books are phasing out for the following reasons:
1. Curriculum Alignment: Books that do not align with the CBC’s skills-based approach are being replaced.
2. Outdated Content: Older textbooks with outdated information are being updated.
3. Competency Focus: Materials promoting memorization are being replaced with those encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving.
4. Inclusivity: Books lacking inclusive and differentiated content are being replaced to cater to diverse learning needs.
5. Integration of Technology: Print-only books are being supplemented with interactive digital resources.
6. Feedback: Educator and student feedback has driven the need for more engaging, relevant materials.
7. Policy Reforms: Changes in government policies require updated educational materials.
