How To Change Truck Tyres
Step 1 Jack up vehicle with lifting platform or truck jack
First you have to jack up the truck – this is done either with a jack suitable for trucks or even better with a lifting platform. The basic requirement for this is that you have learned how to use the relevant equipment or that a qualified person is present to help you. It is particularly important that the truck is lifted properly and securely so that you can work on it safely.
Step 2 Remove the truck tyre
Now loosen the nuts of the wheel bolts. The best way to do this is to use a noise-reduced pneumatic screwdriver. In order to comply with occupational health and safety requirements and to protect your ears, you should also wear hearing protection. Once the wheel is loose, grab it from the outside with both hands and carefully pull it off. Ensure you follow good ergonomic procedures, otherwise the weight of the tyre can quickly lead to back pain.
Step 3 Clean and deflate truck tyres
The rims may be covered with brake dust. This should only be removed during wet cleaning (ideally in a wheel washer). If you whirl it up during a dry cleaning, you may breathe it in – and this has dangerous health consequences. Now let the air out of the cleaned tyre. To do this, unscrew the valve core using a valve extractor.
Step 4 Remove tyres on the truck tyre changer
The tyre changer allows you to easily remove and fit new tyres onto the rims. It is important that you place your bead breaker as close as possible to the rim fl**ge without touching it directly. If the tyre is very tight, you can continue turning the wheel several times and loosen the beads by repeatedly using the bead breaker.
Now clamp the wheel on the tyre changer. For alloy wheels, use clamping jaws or guard rings to prevent damage to the centring. Make sure that air pressure sensors are present and replace the old valve with a new one. Then adjust the tyre fitting arm to the correct tyre size (here it may help to follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Undo the beads one by one until you can remove the tyre.
Step 5 Check the truck wheel rims carefully
Slowly turn the wheel on the machine and check the rim carefully. Are there any dents, cracks or rusty spots? If necessary, consult experts and carry out minor repairs. It is important that the rim is in good condition for the upcoming journeys.
Step 6 Fit the new truck tyre
Check the finished tyre for cracks or other minor damage and make sure that it is regular in shape. Allow the lubricant to dry and clean the hub, bolts and nuts of the wheel during this time. Then you can take the finished wheel to the truck and first attach it loosely. First loosely fasten it with two opposing bolts before attaching all the others.
Centre the wheel using two wheel bolts. Then tighten all the others only halfway before you lower the truck. Then use a torque wrench and proceed in such a way that after tightening one bolt you first fasten the opposite one, then the one next to it together with the one opposite it and so on. Important! Do not use a wheel gun for this last tightening operation! Otherwise there is a risk that you will exceed the permissible tightening torque.
Step 7 Adjust the inflation pressure
After fitting, you must adjust the tyre pressure to the prescribed level. This can be found in the application table of the tyre manufacturer. Even if you have only replaced one truck tyre, you should check and correct the pressure in all tyres.
There you got it! Happy changing!
4 Things You Should Never Do When Changing A Tyre
Changing a flat tyre on the roadway is something no one wants to do. It is an unpleasant task at best and can actually be quite dangerous.
Thankfully, most flat tyres don’t result in accidents or injuries. But even simple tire changes can ruin your day. To make the process as safe and smooth as possible, here are three things you should never do when changing a flat tyre.
1. Wait until you have a flat before you check your spare
Many drivers have no idea how to remove their spare tyre or where to find the jack. At night on a deserted road is not the time to figure it out. Because the location and type of spare tyre differs from one vehicle to the next, if you aren't familiar with your vehicle it's a good idea to check out the spare (and the jack and lug wrench) before trouble occurs. While you're at it, make sure the spare has enough air in it and continue to check that periodically.
2.Change a flat in an unsafe location
If you can’t find a parking lot or safe area to pull into, try getting as far off the roadway as possible. Trying to change a tyre on a roadside with traffic zipping past just a few feet away is dangerous. It is better to end up replacing a damaged tyre from driving while it is flat than to be hit by another vehicle.
3.Forget to block the tyre
When you start to jack up a vehicle, its weight and center of gravity shift. As a result, it can roll forward, backward, or even slide off of the jack. When changing a tire, always set the emergency brake and block the tyres with rocks or blocks to keep the vehicle from rolling. Typically, you’ll want to block the tyre opposite of the flat tire. In other words, if the left front tyre is flat, place a brick, rock, or other large, heavy object behind the right rear tire.
4. Raise the car without taking out the spare
Spares are heavy so you don’t want to lift it any higher than necessary. You also don’t want to lean across a jacked-up car to get the spare out of the trunk or hatch. Roll the spare tire next to the wheel you are replacing.
Once you’ve successfully changed your tyre, you should take your vehicle to an experienced tyre service center. Many spare tyres are not meant for prolonged use, so you need to get the flat tyre fixed or replaced as quickly as possible. Flat tyres can also sometimes cause other damage so having the car checked by a qualified tyre expert makes sense.
Change Tyres Like the Pros with the Impact Wrench.
Changing tyres by hand is hard work and time-consuming. With a car impact wrench from Attic Power Tools, you can change your tyres much faster and in a more relaxed way. The 12 V impact wrench can be connected to the cigarette lighter so it's quickly at hand when a puncture puts a stop to your journey. In addition to the obligatory jack, this makes the impact wrench a companion that will quickly win your heart during seasonal or unexpected tyre changes.
IS IT WORTH GETTING AN IMPACT WRENCH?
It can be said their main use is for bolting and unbolting screws easily, which makes an impact wrench ideal for putting up garden decking, removing wheels and other similar projects. It can also be a good idea to keep one in your garage or car. Out on the road, you’re unlikely to have an air compressor – so an impact wrench can help if you need to change your vehicle tyres.
