URBAN FLOODING
Many Kenyans have attributed the current flooding in most urban areas to "encroachment of developers into riparian land". I find this escapist and bordering on ignorance. And this is my argument:
Nairobi, the land of cool waters, was always a riparian land. This city was built on a swamp where nomadic pastoralists would bring their livestock only during dry seasons. But we made it into a city and constructed skyscrapers.
Human civilisation has always been about utilising natural forces to serve our interests. That's why planes fly. It is how we generate electricity through various systems. But that's to digress...
In urbanizing our lifestyles, we've had to construct hundreds of thousands of square kilometres of pavements. We've had to build many hactares of road surfaces. We've built houses and homes in hundreds of thousands of hactares of land. We have made all these surfaces, which were otherwise pervious, impervious! The only infrastructure we haven't build are drains! So, where did we expect all that water from the large impervious surfaces to go? To continue flowing through it's "natural channels"? No. We've generated much more runoff that natural flow systems can carry safely.
The solution to our actions should be to invest similar efforts in evacuating the run off through modern engineering interventions. No moving away from "riparian land" will guarantee our safety, unless we can continue expanding the so called riparian land to accommodate the increased runoff. But this is not possible. We must now resort to technology to be able to evacuate more water though narrower spaces.
The above is possible given that under such designed channels, we can, to a greater extent, determine flow through such channels by working around gradients and other flow parameters.
Cities of the future must prepare to evacuate more water through narrower and denser pathways. We must consider underground evacuation channels to save space for our developmental demands. We must re-engineer existing waterways to make them more efficient. We must reduce the undulations and meanderings in some of our city channels. We must create additional drains where none existed and balance these with the need for other infrastructure. We must invest in large water storage infrastructures to trap and conserve these seasonal flows.
Urban flooding is a failure of engineering and planning than simply "encroachment into riparian land". Let's think harder and avoid simplified escapist theories.
Finally, an agreement to "transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly, and equitable manner".
This in itself is a huge leap at the global level. We support.

KeSEBAE team held discussions earlier today with Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) earlier today. The Chairperson presented a copy of the Journal of Engineering in Agriculture and the Environment to the Chief Manager, Renewable Energy at REREC, Eng. Ephantus Kamweru.
KeSEBAE Executive Committee earlier today held a very constructive meeting with the UNEP Acting Deputy Executive Director Ms Sonja Leighton-Kone and her team at the UNEP offices in Nairobi. The discussions focused on how the two institutions can collaborate in common areas of interest. KeSEBAE team was led by the Chairperson, Eng. Prof. Lawrence Gumbe.
Last night, NASA and NOAA announced 2022 as the 5th hottest year on record since 1880. Global warming is real and it has serious consequences on particularly the poor and vulnerable. These are five ways YOU can help address this problem:
1. Use less energy. Switch off energy gadgets you don't need. Don't drive if you don't have to, check on the energy rating of appliances you use, etc.
2. Watch what you eat. Reduce meat intake. Take less processed foods.
3. Adopt green energy and maximise use of natural light.
4. Properly and regularly maintain energy gadgets in your home. These include fridges, taps, cookers, washing machines, iron boxes, etc.
5. Ask your institution to conduct regular energy audits and act on recommendations of such audits.
Thank you.
Thanks all for a very successful 2022 Conference. Has been our greatest pleasure hosting so many. Much love.
