Some time ago, I went to the famous Kiambu soko to get some vegetables and fruits for my family. As usual, being a market day, many had come for shopping. As I was waiting for mama mboga to look for change, I happened to overhear some mushene – a certain conversation between a young lady who was holding his son's hand and an elderly man. Don't blame me; I was too close, and we know maskio hayana pazia.
The lady was complaining that she had taken her son to the hospital, but the doctor had sworn not to give her son any more medication till she stopped giving her son sugary foods and snacks. Before I could finish hearing the rebuke of the elderly man to that lady, my mama mboga returned with my change, and I had to move on. Too bad I didn’t get the full juice of the conversation.
That conversation took me back to my childhood days. Whenever my brother and I were requesting our parents for permission to go to a friend's birthday party, they would always stamp this one thing." Don't drink sodas, processed juice, or eat ice cream. “Of course, we would cheekily nod in agreement to their rule, but in my heart of hearts, I would give a sarcastic smile and question, "mbona mnatukazia?" They didn't have to ask us if we had taken juice on returning from the birthday party. The first thing they would notice is my cough then they would rebuke us for disobeying them. Indeed, truth has a funny way of coming out, no matter how majestically you hide it.
Do you remember agreeing with your parents for the sake of agreeing? How was that like for you?
I'll continue this on our next post, but I'd love to know your thoughts before that. What do you think about sugar? How much sugar have you been consuming on a daily basis? Have you been intentionally careful not to intoxicate your body with too much of it? Remember we are stewards of these bodies God entrusted us with. If what we eat affects the very core of our minds, then it’s about time we became a little bit more intentional with our feeds.
