Producers and Brands have an important role to play through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) throughout their products' life cycle. Their role begins from the design stage, by making sure their products are made to last, and be repairable, reused or upcycled into new products. Likewise consumers also have a role to play by ensuring proper disposal after products are no longer useful to them.
Today, we celebrate all those who are dedicated to keeping our environment clean, safe and habitable, for us, our biodiversity and our future generations. Happy Labour Day!
Waste to value enterprises in Kenya can benefit greatly from women's inclusion in their decision making. Often assigned roles such as sorting and segregation, women understand the daily efforts involved and have a connection to the community.
Interventions should empower women, youth, and marginalized community members with skills for decision-making, ownership, large scale waste management, and capacity building to promote enterprise development and exploitable opportunities.
📢 Here is an Exciting Call for Women in Mombasa to Become Gender Champions!

Revisiting plastic recycling codes: These recycling codes can be used by consumers to make a distinction between plastics that would be safer for the environment than other plastics.
Please note that the ones classified as "difficult to recycle" are due to the recycling technology currently available in Kenya.
that 40% of food is wasted in Kenya between leaving the farm and getting to consumers in Kenya? This is according to a 2022 Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) Of the United Nations (UN). report.
This however shows an opportunity that the country should explore, the use of biodigesters to convert the organic waste to energy that can be used around the markets, and lessen food insecurity.♻️
For more plastics to be recyclable, we have to think about where they will end-up after usage, and ensure the material they are fused with in their initial design stage does not negatively affect its recyclability. For more information, check our Design Guidelines for Recyclability of PET and HDPE bottles and jars.

Here's a crash course on
This model promotes sustainable production and consumption by sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products, thereby extending their life cycle and minimizing waste.
It's not only in plastics, but can be applied in any production process that results to waste that can harm the environment.
What's the last household item you reused or repurposed? ♻️
are a double-edged sword in their utility and their effects when carelessly disposed.
While useful in agriculture, plastics still breaks down
eventually, and their micro fragments can compromise the soil's condition.

📢 Through our secretariat; Sustainable Inclusive Business-Kenya (SIB-K), we can’t wait to tell you about the stories of these women and men who are conquering the waste management sector.
This is part of our “Gender Mainstreaming in Waste Management Toolkit," coming up soon. Stay tuned!
On today's post on explaining industry jargon, we explore the term Producer Responsibility Organizations (PRO).
These organisations or associations fit in the model when it comes to collection and transportation of items at their end-of-life from producers or consumers, back to authorized recyclers♻️
Which other term do you want us to explore?
