ELEPHANT TUSK
Ivory tusks are actually massive teeth that protrude well beyond the mouths of elephants. Much of the tusks is made up of dentine, a hard, dense, bony tissue. And the whole tusk is wrapped in enamel, the hardest animal tissue and the part of the tusk that manages the most wear and tear.
The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) weighs from 3 tonnes to 7 tonnes. It eats between 90 and 270 kilos of fodder and drinks between 200 and 300 litres of water a day. It depends almost entirely on its trunk for scent and communication, washing and cleaning, carrying and clearing, and for drinking and eating. Gestation takes close to two years. During labour the mother is attended by two other females-'midwives'.Although their sight is poor, elephants have an excellent sense of smell and well-developed hearing. Their brain weighs three times that of a human brain - up to 5 kilos
