I had a delicious conversation with about her new Cookbook AfriCali

Kiano was born in Oakland, California, to a Maasai-Kenyan mother and Nigerian father, who both moved to the U.S. in their early adulthood. Inspired by a love for chemistry inherited from her father, a biochemist, Kiano found herself drawn to her mother’s side in the kitchen, intrigued by the science of cooking and the culture that surrounds it.

From several summers on her grandparents’ ranch in Kenya to taking cooking classes throughout her young adulthood, Kiano’s love for food stemmed from a young age.

After graduating with a Masters of Publishing from the University of The Arts in London, Kiano began her career in food media, acutely aware of the industry’s lack of diverse representation and determined to create space for more cultures and voices.

During her time as a video producer at Buzzfeed’s Tasty, Kiano helped bring its production from majority-minded content to a breadth of recipes from various cultures.

In Late 2019, she launched her own full-service production company, Jikoni Studios, which has produced cooking videos & commercials for industry giants such as Food Network, Fox Studios, Tastemade, the USDA, and many more. Kiano also founded the non-profit organization Jikoni Recipe Archive, which documents the legacy of African and Black cooks, both old-school and new-school, while amplifying and celebrating their vibrant food cultures. It is a culinary beacon for African and Black cuisine that curates the resources to amplify these food identities while preserving them for generations to come.

Through her work, and with the release of AfriCali, Kiano carves out space in food media for underrepresented voices and cultures, challenging existing norms and championing inclusivity.

I had a great conversation with up and coming star, Matt Ngesa.

Matt Ngesa is a singer-songwriter living in Nairobi, Kenya performing and self-producing indie, rock and pop music. Starting out in 2015, Ngesa first interacted with music in the church and later graduated to studio recordings, performing his music opening for Christian Rap artists like Andy Mineo, as well as artists in Nairobi such as Men of Soul (Kenya).

Having released his first EP in the heat of the pandemic, Ngesa started his music career as a solo artist in 2020. He used the delivery of the “Rem Me EP” to place a spotlight on his own ability to carry the stage after years of being a supporting role for local artists. Since the release of his first EP, Matt has produced and released 3 indie pop singles: Quick Fix, Oh Shoot and River. These musical extracts - from a bigger project to come - have paved the way for Matt’s creative vision into a soulful soft rock era, all inspired from his western upbringing and love for rock and indie music.

Following his debut on A COLORS SHOW in 2023, the most recent release of Muse is refreshed with Matt's very first music video. I am excited to announce I will be working with .ke a nonprofit organization committed to raising awareness, fostering inclusivity, and advocating for children with autism and special needs in Kenya. They provide support, drive policy change, and empower families to shine.

First identified 70 years ago, the name changed from simply “autism” to ASD to include a wider range of complex deficits and difficulties with social interaction and communication.

These autistic disorders include early infantile autism, Asperger’s syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder. At one time in Kenya, autism was associated with mental illness, curses or witchcraft. Autistic children were confined to their homes and young adults taken to psychiatric institutions.

Miss World is the oldest running international pageant. The heart of the pageant is what impact can participants have on the lives of their community. Mr and Miss World Kenya aims to embody this in all our actions and our goal is to find the next role model for the next generation.

This year Miss World Kenya will be commemorating 50 years of its existence under the theme dubbed ‘‘A Crown of Impact.’’

CONGRATULATIONS:
Grace Ramtu a professional model and fashion designer with over five years of experience in the industry. She specializes in designing and runs her own company, Ramtu Fashion Designs. Grace holds a diploma in fashion and design.

Outside her professional life, Grace is passionate about mentoring young professionals and is actively involved in supporting young sexually abused girls.

In her free time, she enjoys deejaying, reading books, traveling and exploring new experiences

Rossiter Teddy Ogoye. Is an industrious and charismatic leader. Over the past years, he’s collaborated with both local and international brands, spanning high fashion to sustainable initiatives. Currently, I’m a student at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Commerce.

In terms of personal development, he enjoy wellness and self-care practices such as fitness, meditation, and maintaining a positive outlook. I’m excited to embark on this new journey and am eager to give it my all.

The purpose of the Shine Bright Initiative is multifaceted, aiming to address various challenges faced by children with autism and other complex needs, as well as their parents and caregivers. Through education and support. The initiative seeks to raise awareness, provide practical support, advocate for policy change and facilitate community support.

By addressing these aspects, the Shine Bright Initiative aims to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with special needs and their families, fostering a more supportive and inclusive society. Through collaboration with a diverse team of professionals and individuals with lived experience, the initiative strives to create positive change and open doors for those in need.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopment condition characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Individuals with autism may also have unique strengths and abilities. ASD affects people of all races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds worldwide.

By prioritising sustainability and expansion strategies, they can ensure the long-term success and impact of the initiative to raise awareness about autism and special needs in Kenya, extending its reach and benefits to more individuals and communities both within the country and beyond. By securing sustainable funding, forging strategic partnerships, and replicating the initiative’s model in other regions or countries, they can contribute to lasting change and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with autism and their families worldwide.

I learnt so much about not only children with autism but also what the rest of life can look like, what we can do as a society and so much more

I had a wonderful conversation with the creators of .ke

As a fairly new event and company, Undertow started on 23rd April 2022 as a music live-performance platform for Kenya’s underground artists. The event emerged as a means to address the challenges posed to underground artists in the country.

Currently, rock, punk and metal as music genres have been widely sidelined in the music industry in Kenya. With arbitrary restrictions by mainstream local clubs and music venues, and little to non-existent airplay on mainstream media, Rock, Punk and Metal artists and audiences are faced with an extremely challenging situation which undermines the growth and exposure of their scene as a whole.

All Undertow does is to provide a platform for local underground talents to display their skills while fully empowering them to directly market the event and generate their own returns.

Simply put, “Undertow is by the scene, for the scene”.
One of their goals is to reach out to as many people as possible to extend their reach to more unknown talented musicians, as well as to ensure people know of the existence of this scene, and also to welcome them to experience this unique display of talents.

However, they do not limit their events to Rock, Punk and Metal genres. They welcome applications by underground artists from other alternative genres as long as they can match the energy of the event.

All in all, this is why Undertow is “home to music misfits and underground talent”.
