Erica Hunter needs frequent blood donations to help treat her sickle cell disease. She was diagnosed at two years old and was in the hospital more times than she was at home. After college, things got worse. She hemorrhaged from complications from sickle cell and had a stroke after having her daughter. She now receives monthly apheresis or whole blood red cell exchanges of up to 10 units, which means 8-10 people need to be willing to donate every month in order to help her prevent further complications related to sickle cell.

At least 240,000 children in Africa are born each year with Sickle Cell Disease. In Kenya, it is estimated that 14,000 children are born with Sickle Cell Disease every year.
