Last week, the greenback jumped nearly 1% to reach three-month highs before giving back most of those gains as investors reacted to mixed US economic data.

Latest data showed that US consumer and producer prices increased more than expected in January, while US retail sales declined faster than expected last month.

Traders have now pushed back bets for the first interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve to June from March. Markets also see less than 100 basis points of total easing this year, down significantly from about 150 bps of cuts seen at the start of the year.

The dollar index hovered three-month highs around 104.8 on Wednesday after jumping 0.7% in the previous session, as hotter-than-expected US consumer inflation data reinforced the view that the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates later than the market expects.
The headline inflation rate fell to 3.1% in January from 3.4% in December, but came in above forecasts of 2.9%. The core inflation rate was unchanged at 3.9%, defying expectations for a slowdown to 3.7%.

Additionally, the report noted a decrease in OPEC oil production by 350,000 bpd in January, following the implementation of a new round of voluntary output cuts by the OPEC+ alliance for the first quarter.

Gold was subdued around $2,020 an ounce on Monday as most markets in the Asia Pacific region were closed for holidays, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

Investors also cautiously awaited key US inflation data that could influence the outlook for interest rates.

On Friday, the metal failed to gain ground even as revised US figures revealed a smaller increase in the CPI for December. According to the BLS, the CPI rose by 0.2% month-over-month, slightly lower than the initial report of 0.3%.

However, the core CPI remained unchanged at 0.3%. Markets still see a small chance for a Federal Reserve rate cut in March, but are pricing in a move in May.

Traders also look ahead to US retail sales figures on Thursday and producer inflation data on Friday, as well as remarks from at least seven Fed officials this week.

The dollar index eased toward 104 on Wednesday, retreating from a near three-month high hit in the previous session as investors continued to assess the outlook for Federal Reserve monetary policy.

US Treasury yields also pulled back from recent highs amid strong demand at an auction of new three-year notes, pressuring the dollar. Still, the currency remained supported by solid US economic data and hawkish rhetoric from Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

Data released on Tuesday showed that US household debt reached a new record high of $17.5 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2023 amid increased credit activity across the board.

Meanwhile, Powell reiterated in an interview over the weekend that a March rate cut is unlikely, similar to comments made last week after the FOMC decision. He added that the central bank will likely move at a considerably slower pace on rate cuts than the market expects.

Analysts pointed to a series of US strikes on Iran-backed militias over the weekend, although US officials emphasized that the country is not seeking a wider conflict in the region. Oil prices also nursed heavy losses from last week as there has been no immediate disruptions to supply.

Last week, oil prices plunged more than 7% as progress in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas significantly reduced supply risks in the Middle East.

Fading expectations of immediate interest rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve and persistent concerns about China’s economic recovery also weighed on the global demand outlook.

The dollar index rebounded to trade above 103.5 on Wednesday after Federal Reserve Chair Powell signaled a March rate cut was unlikely.

During the Fed's press conference, Powell said it would be appropriate to begin reducing rates sometime this year and that policymakers needed "to see more” evidence that inflation is heading back to the target, even though the rates remain too high, and the path forward is uncertain.
