NRP Drama and Confusion

In the local election of 12 December, 2022 NRP won 2 seats. Shortly thereafter, in a colossal failure of leadership, the NRP expelled its Deputy Leader and immediately lost 1 of the 2 seats. That internal confusion in NRP has resulted in there being no Leader of the Opposition and as a consequence all now we cannot get the Integrity in Public Life Commission constituted as there is neither Leader of the Opposition nor consensus among the parliamentary Opposition. The Commission is unable to be constituted and therefore unable to function. Why? Because of NRP internal drama and confusion.

We cannot continue to allow NRP internal drama and confusion to prevent such a critical Commission from doing its work. We are therefore in the Parliament today to find a way to allow the Integrity Commission to be constituted and to get on with its work.

We have been forced into Parliament today because even in Opposition the NRP has shown that it cannot manage even the most basic responsibilities.

The Integrity in Public Life (Amendment) Bill 2023 will have its first reading only today and thereafter will be disseminated for public consultations and comments.

Good morning my friends. Please help me show some love to Nevis’ two newest doctors both Brown Hillian stock. Please meet Dr Romario Daniel and Dr Aejari Browne both of whom have excelled at their medical studies.

Nevisians are great and resilient people and have always shown exceptionalism in whatever they do but these two young men are special to me because I know the story of Dr Browne’s father and my brother King Astro Oscar Browne and Dr Daniel’s mother and my sister Roxanne Brookes. Both King Astro and Roxy were childhood friends in Brown Hill and we remain friends 45 years later. Back then poverty and lack of opportunity were our constant companions. Brown Hill was referred to as “The Ghetto” and people from Brown Hill were labeled as wutliss and bad. And yet from that backdrop Astro’s household has produced a brilliant doctor and Roxy has done the same.

These are the stories that should motivate us all as Nevisians. These are the stories that confirm for us that it is not where we start in life that matters but where we end up. We are never ever limited by the circumstances of our birth but only by the extent of our ambition.

Congratulations to Dr Browne and Dr Daniel and to their parents and may God bless them and bless their hands as they now become instruments of healing and well-being for our people. Praise be to God!!!

My fellow Nevisians and residents,

We have all been shocked tonight by the massive fire at the Four Seasons Resort, Nevis.

I am happy to report that I have been in constant contact with our Cabinet and the General Manager of the Resort and I have had regular updates from our fire fighting team through PS Wakely Daniel. Preliminary reports suggest that the gym and pro shop areas at the Resort have been destroyed but there is no damage to the main hotel or any of the guest rooms or villas. Most importantly, I am truly happy to report that there have been no reported injuries or loss of life.

I record my congratulations to our brave fire fighters and to all who assisted in bringing this fire under control. I extend our heartfelt sympathies to the owners, management and staff at the Resort and pledge the Government’s fullest support and partnership in returning our landmark hotel to its former glory as quickly as possible.

I also record my deep appreciation to both Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley both of whom have been in close contact with me during this ordeal.

While tonight has been a tragedy affecting all of Nevis, I reflect that it could have been much worse and that God in His wisdom spared us the agony of injury or loss of life. We are a praying people and I ask us now to continue to pray for the continued safety and well-being of all and the speedy recovery of the Four Seasons Resort. God’s grace is sufficient and in Him we repose our trust and confidence.

Good night and God bless you 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
