Oi! Nós somos o My Culture Is ☺️🙌🏼

🍢🇰🇷🍲

Kimchi, which is one of the most well-known Korean soul foods, is loved by many people over the world these days. If you once fall for this salty side dish, you might not be able to have rice without it.

There are several kinds of Kimchi. Cabbage Kimchi which is widely prevalent these days has existed only for 100 years. This cabbage we are using for Kimchi nowadays was introduced from China in the late 19th century and Doctor Woo Jang-Choon made improvements to the species of this cabbage.

Also, did you know that Kimchi was not food for the common people? Since Salt, one of the main ingredients of Kimchi used to be very pricey in the past. Therefore, the common people had to use spare salty water after the aristocrats finished making Kimchi or use seawater for salting cabbage down.

People say that making Kimchi is very scientific since it had been the most excellent way of keeping vegetables fresh during the winter before the invention of refrigerators. People need vitamin C for living and the intake of vitamin C can be done through eating veggies. Salting down vegetables to preserve them can lose nutrition or flavors, but Kimchi is evaluated to have solved these problems.

Minhwa, Korean folk art, was once produced mostly by itinerant or unknown artists without formal training to decorate everyday life in the Joseon Dynasty. It is characterized by the vivid coloring of flowers, animals, or ornaments that represent health, happiness, and fortune.

The form of Minhwa is not settled in one way since it was not drawn by aristocrats who got much education and were influenced by China/abroad culture. However, it expresses the racial emotion of the time. Also, it has humor in the drawings unlike artworks by aristocrats. Sometimes, we can see the drawing technique more like Cubism, which draws the object in many angles.

Minhwa reflects the real life of people in the Joseon Dynasty. People wish good luck or longevity by drawing flowers, birds and bugs. So when they have a party celebrating a person turning 60, they used to give Minhwa with flowers, birds and bugs. Also, carps jumping high is a symbol of the gateway to success.

If you need some good luck, how about drawing one of these Minhwas so that you can protect good luck and expect longevity of your loved ones?

Moon jar, which was created in the late Joseon dynasty, was named after its shape like a full moon. It has round curves, giving the audience the feeling of stability. ⚪️
Because of the full round shape and its size, the upper part and the lower part of the jar were made separately, attached to each other afterwards. Therefore, the beauty of the structure can differ according to the potter.
The color of the jar, milky white was a kind of signature color of the Joseon Dynasty, representing the integrity and dignity of the noblemen. 😎😎

If you are interested in making one of these moon jars with the spirit of the Joseon dynasty, try out one of our pottery classes making the exact same moon jar!

Have you heard of ‘Newtro’? It’s a word combining ‘New’ and ‘Retro’, meaning the trend that people enjoy Retro mood/fashion/accessory, etc in a new way.💝🌈🦋

Mother-of-pearl handicrafts are one of the representative Newtro items. They are also popular as traditional souvenirs from trips to South Korea.

Mother-of-pearl craft is handicrafts made of shells glued onto a piece of wood applied lacquer several times. To create the glamorous twinkle, the shells were shaved into a thin layer with specific shapes.

They used to be beautiful decorations on furniture like the wardrobe seen at grandma’s house,👵🏼🧓🏽 so mother-of-pearl crafts reminded many Koreans of their childhood memories. However, these days, they are used in goods such as mirrors, phone cases and accessory containers used in everyday life.🖤

This amulet was a must-have item for ancestors in Korea. As it was believed to protect from bad things if they were carried on or kept it close to them. I wish to give it to everyone to protect them.
