Seol-nal in Korea.Lunar New Year, known as Seol-nal, is one of Korea's major holidays. Many of the time-honored rituals remain today. Koreans gather with their families and pay respect toancestors. No one wants to come empty-handed to visit family. Everyone comesbearing gifts. Only a fraction of the populationstill lives in their hometown. Given this, the highways transform into one huge parking lot.Families prepare the dishes required for theancestral rites. This has long been the duty of women. All Koreans eat tteokguk whichbestows one year to your age. The family also performs the traditional rites through food offerings and special rituals like sebae and jeol.

Talk about the popularity of makgeolli.

Makgeolli has become one of the most popularalcoholic drinks in Korea as of late. It’s a traditionalKorean rice wine made from various fermented grains. The top layer of the final product is asmoother drink called dong-dong-ju. Makgeolli is the bottom layer with more sediment mixed in. Makgeolliused to be considered a farmer’s drink, but now it’s popular among all age groups. There are many bars that offer different makgeolli flavors or cocktails. For example, there’s black soybean makgeolli, chesnutmakgeolli, and even pine nut makgeolli. Makgeollihas been increasing in exports to other countries. It has recently been given an official English name, “Drunken Rice.”

Hanwoo is not foreign cattle simply raised in Korea. It is a native breed of Korean cattle. Koreans take pridein their hanwoo. Hanwoo is more expensive than other imported beef from the US, Australia, or New Zealand. However, there are reasons for this. Hanwoois lower in cholesterol compared to other beef. It also has a higher omega-3 fatty acid count. So it’s healthier than beef from other cattle. Taste-wise, it’s very soft, juicy, and delicious. The marbling inhanwoo steak is excellent as well. It has the right balance of meat and fat. If Korans had a choice, most would choose to eat hanwoo.

Talk about how Koreans like to get body scrubs.

Koreans love to give themselves body scrubs. We use a rough shower cloth and scrub really hard. Thisexfoliates the dead skin cells. Your skin feels softand refreshed after a scrub. You can do this at home or at a public bathhouse. Public bathhouses have hot and cold tubs where you can soak in. Soaking your skin in hot water makes scrubbing easier. There are even body scrub professionals that will do the work for you at bathhouses. This can be compared to spa treatments in the West. However, unlike in the West, Koreans go to bathhouses regularly because they are much cheaper and more common here

These surnames account for nearlyhalf of the ethnic Korean population. There are only about 250 Korean last names currentlybeing used. This is because Korea is amongthe world's most homogeneous societies. So you may wonder if all Kims are related. Not necessarily. Each surname is divided intodifferent clans called bon-gwan, whichidentifies the family's city of origin. For instance, my bon-gwan is Milyang Park. It means that I'm the Park clan from the town of Milyang. What is your bon-gwan?
