팁: (유엔청원서 제출 위한)탈북민들 인터뷰 읽게 되면 고문 일화에 감정이입하지 말고 최대한 사무적으로 키워드만 뽑아서 정리하기 (정신건강에 매우 해로우니 나이나 성별을 보면서 가족이나 친구 떠올리지 말고, 고문당하는 순간 동안 본인은 뭘 하고 있었는지 연상하지 말기!)

NK Watch Internship (2023.07.10. ~ 2023.10.17.) Completion

Pros: Free Lunch & Coffee, the pay is good and City Hall is nearby- great for commute! Can interact with interesting NK field workers + communicate with experts/ fascinating backstories by defectors (e.g. former North Korean spy, political prison camp guard, KPA soldier...) + learn about CSO (and government) working style
Also very cool co-workers who are kind and knowledgable and hospitable, willing to teach what they know

Cons: Cataloging all the gruesome details you DIDN'T need to know on what happens after repatriation to the North- is it better to tell the interrogators where your ACTUAL hometown is? Should you notify your family about your whereabouts? Which body parts do you get beaten and with what? Where do you hide your (Chinese) money if you're a woman and what materials do you use for sanitary pads? What happens if someone sells you out on smuggling South Korean entertainment?
+ reading reports on the Syrian military prison of Saydnaya
++ trying to research Soviet gulags and getting an eyesore depictions on how THEIR detainees get tortured (and remarking on how similar they are to the NK counterparts)

Learned a lot (thanks for the recommendation by ), huge respect to human rights activists, researchers, lawyers and glad to have contributed some of my time on: research on human rights violations in North Korea, Korean-English Translation regarding the International Affairs of NK Watch, interviews with the victims of North Korean human rights violations and Organization of Advocacy Campaigns

[관동대지진 조선인 학살 100주년]

On September 1st, 1923 the Kanto Earthquake devastate Japan- a catastrophe for Japanese, followed by unrest and chaos.
Rumors began to spread, blaming socialists and Koreans for the fires since the first day, which was encouraged by the Japanese government.

On the 2nd of September, the Japanese government enacted martial law and fueled the rumors, with the newspapers putting on headlines of riots by Koreans.

During September 2nd to 6th, as the police and the army arrested and killed Koreans, the Japanese public formed vigilante groups and sought out Koreans, indiscriminately killing them. In the process, not only Koreans but Japanese mistaken as Koreans due to their dialects were killed along with Okinawans and Chinese.

Korean corpses were burned and the exact number of the victims could not be investigated. Koreans in Japan were delayed from getting back to the peninsula in order to stop the news of the massacre, with an embargo on media.

While memorial events were held for the victims since the 1970s, with public figures sending messages of remembrance- the Governor Koike Yuriko refused to send messages since 2017.

연주자 분들 덕분에 순간마다 (샤이어..! 뉴질랜드 꼭 방문해야지) 감동하면서 몰입할 수 있었다

절망적으로 열세인 상황에서도 희망을 찾아가는 원정대 모습은 모두가 본받아도 되지 않을까
(현대 한국 사회에도 많은 함의를 줄 듯)

After Japan's defeat on August 15th, 1945 Korea was liberated by the Allies, then the peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel line.
The US and the Soviet Union held Joint Commissions after the Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Moscow, in December 1945. But despite negotiations through more than 60 meetings and 2 separate sessions, they failed to achieve a democratic Korean provisional government.
The US turned the issue of Korean independence over to the UN in 1947, which passed the General Assembly while the USSR refused the United Nations Temporary Commission on Korea (UNTCOK) entry into the Northern half. The UN decided to hold elections in the territories possible, while Koreans in the South clash over unification methods and 'an only South' elections. Leftists and communists stage violent protests sponsored by the North, while moderates attempt to mediate and visit the North to discuss alternative methods. Right-wing factions support the decision and side with the police to suppress political opponents.

Korea's first modern democratic type of election is held on May 10th, 1948 through universal, equal, direct, secret ballot principles. There is a 95.5% voter turnout rate. Only 40 out of 13,000 polling places were attacked and less than forty people were killed.

The National Constitution is proclaimed on July 17th, with the basic frame of the Republic set in the constitution.
On August 15th, the first democratic republic in Korean history was established.
Independence Activists Syngman Rhee and Yi Si-yeong were elected as first president and vice president respectively by the National Assembly.
The Republic of Korea inherited the legitimacy of the Provisional Government of Korea (established in 1919 following the March Independence Movement)
A democratic system that guaranteed representative institutions, the separation of powers, universal suffrage, freedom of the press, protest and association, was introduced.

이에 국가보훈부는 11일(금) 일본에 정부대표단을 파견해 자녀들과 면담을 통해 국내로 모시는 방안에 대해 논의하고, 오 지사의 건강 상태가 귀국에 어려움이 없다고 확인되는 경우 13일(일) 국내로 모실 예정입니다.

국가보훈부는 오 지사가 마지막 여생을 조국의 품에서 편안히 보낼 수 있도록 최고의 예우를 다하겠습니다.

밥상에서 식사를 하는 조선의 중인(中人)이다. 밥상의 맨 위 오른쪽에 보이는 밥은 남녀를 가리지 않는 조선인들의 주식이었다. 특히 조선의 남성들은 오늘 날 조선인/한인들이 주로 먹는 밥의 양보다 두배가 넘는 양의 밥을 먹었다고 한다. 사진 속의 남성은 큰 그릇에 담겨 있는 밥은 물론 국과 여럿의 나물 반찬들을 먹고 있다.

사진속에 있는 밥상은 일상 식사 때 쓰여지고, ‘반상’이라 불린다. 반상에는 밥, 국과 김치는 기본으로 하고 물론 여러 반찬이 포함된다. ‘외상’은 1인분의 상차림이고, 반찬의 수에 따라 3첩, 5첩, 7첩, 9첩, 아니면 12첩도 될 수 있다. 이 사진은 1890년과 1900년대 사이에 찍혔다.

This is a Joseon man of the 중인(Jungin, 中人) class, who is seen eating a meal on a 밥상(dining table). Among the variety of food, what must be noted here is the rice which is shown on the top right side of the table. Rice was a staple in the average diet of Joseon men and women. The people of Joseon, especially men, generally consumed more than twice the amount of rice that Koreans tend to eat today. As shown here, the man is seen eating a large bowl of rice as well as soup and several vegetable side dishes.

In the case of this particular photo, the term for a table setting in daily meals is called ‘반상’ which includes rice, soup, and kimchi as the standard on the table, along with various side dishes. ‘외상’ is a food table set up for one person and the term used becomes 3첩, 5첩, 7첩, 9첩, 12첩 depending on the number of side dishes.
