International Conference Participants Visit TurkTractor

The participants of the International Conference on Wheat and Rice Value Chain Development and Food Losses and Wates Strategies in CWANA Region also had an opportunity to visit TurkTractor, a prominent name in Turkey's agricultural machinery industry, known for its continual innovation, particularly in its latest tractor models engineered for heightened efficiency and sustainability.

These state-of-the-art tractors, equipped with powerful engines, ergonomic designs, and improved durability, are developed to cater to the changing demands of contemporary agriculture. With a focus on environmentally friendly practices and cost efficiency, TurkTractor is pioneering new heights in agricultural productivity and efficiency.

The visit proved to be highly beneficial, facilitating an exchange of ideas and insights for future collaborations between the participants and representatives of the institutions.

International Conference on Wheat and Rice Value Chain Development and Food Losses and Wastes Strategies in CWANA Region

The International Conference on Wheat and Rice Value Chain Development, a landmark event in the CWANA region, was recently held in Ankara, Turkey from November 29 to December 1, 2023 organized by the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) jointly with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development. The Conference aimed to address critical aspects of the rice and wheat value chains, as well as reviewing the Food Waste and Losses Strategies in Member States. Distinguished experts from various countries from CWANA Region such as , , , , , , , , , who have presented insights and shared their experiences. Key topics included the development patterns and bottlenecks in the value chains, innovative technologies for crop improvement, and strategies for reducing food waste and losses.

The conference highlighted the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge in overcoming challenges in the rice and wheat sectors. Sessions covered a wide range of topics, such as the outlook of rice and wheat value chains in the CWANA region, advanced technologies for drought tolerance in rice, and effective strategies for wheat development. Panel discussions focused on sustainable value chain development, including the role of technology and innovation in enhancing production efficiency. The participants together with the organizing institutions concluded with the development of a collaborative roadmap for regional value chain initiatives, identifying key challenges, best practices, stakeholder perspectives, and risk mitigation and adaptive management. This collaborative effort aims to foster sustainable development in the rice and wheat sectors, ensuring food security and economic stability in the CWANA region.

Furthermore, the attendees had the chance to explore TAMTEST, where they were familiarized with the institution's role in testing and certifying agricultural machinery such as tractors and harvesters to ensure they meet performance, durability, and safety standards. This organization is crucial in maintaining high-quality standards and driving innovation within Turkey's agricultural industry, thus improving the quality of equipment available to farmers in Turkey.

IOFS Reports on its Activities to Senior Official Meeting Preparatory to the 39th COMCEC Ministerial Session in Türkiye

Upon instructions of His Excellency Dr. Masoud Al-Marri, the Caretaker Director General of the Islamic Organization of Food Security (IOFS), Mr. Abdulla Manafi Mutualo, Advisor at the Coordination & Cooperation Department, is representing the Organization at the Senior Official Meeting Preparatory to the 39th Ministerial Session of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC), being held in Istanbul, Republic of Türkiye.

In his address, Mr. Manafi highlighted the centrality of food security issues within the economic domains and interests of all Member States. In such context and while emphasizing the excellent relationship the IOFS enjoys with COMCEC, he reported on the activities held since the last Ministerial Session, highlighting the successful implementation of Africa Food Security Initiative (AFSI), the Afghanistan Food Security Program (AFSP), as well the overall implementation of the IOFS Strategic Vision 2031.

The Senior Officials are therefore expected to adopt all related documents, including the Resolutions of the 39th COMCEC Ministerial Session on 03 December 2023, and the same is to be opened on the following day under the chairmanship of the His Excellency Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of the Republic of Türkiye.

On the sidelines of the Preparatory gathering, the IOFS delegate seized the opportunity to exchange views with participating relevant Institutions of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on potential joint activities to be considered for inclusion in the 7th Matrix of Annual Coordination Meeting of OIC Institutions (ACMOI), a gathering that is expected to be held on 17-18 January 2024 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at the OIC Headquarters.

IOFS participates in Decadal Workshop on Enhancing Food Security in Arab Countries Project

Tunis, Republic of Tunisia- On 01 December, 2023, the delegation of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) , led by the Director of Programs and Projects Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali , participated at the Decadal workshop on Enhancing Food Security in Arab Countries Project organized by the ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas in Tunis, Republic of Tunisia.

The two days (November 30 - December 1, 2023) workshop aimed to review major achievements in each country; outcomes of the capacity development, adoption and impact assessment, food losses and return on investment. Strategic partners gathered from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen.

To note, ICARDA has been implementing Enhancing Food Security in Arab Countries project in three phases in partnership with 10 Arab countries. The different phases of the project were supported by Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD), the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and the Islamic Development Bank Group - isdb.org.

As a specialized institution of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) dedicated to addressing the issue of food security, the IOFS took an active role. Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar presented the vision and mission of the IOFS, and elaborated on possible areas of cooperation in the realm of food security. The participation of the IOFS serves as a testament to promoting a unified food security strategy in the OIC by promoting capacity building and sustainable development.

IOFS Drives Cassava Innovation to New Heights in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria, 29 November, 2023 – The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) successfully concluded the Regional Workshop "Cassava Next Generation Breeding in Nigeria". Mr. Abubakar Ahmad, Cassava Program Consultant at the Programs and Projects Department, represented Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali , the Director of Programs and Projects, in presiding over the concluding sessions of this transformative event held in Abuja, Republic of Nigeria.

This final session served as a platform to extend heartfelt appreciation to the host country and reinforce IOFS's commitments in close collaboration with the Nigerian government and other West African countries within the Member States of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Geography. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates to experts and participants, recognizing their invaluable expertise and active engagement throughout the workshop.

Prof. Garba Hamidu Sharubutu, the Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), representing the country, expressed enthusiasm for IOFS's initiatives, particularly in the cassava value chain. He underscored the significance of Cassava Next Generation Breeding in introducing new planting materials that will not only enhance cassava production in the region but also have a far-reaching impact beyond.

In a bid for continuous improvement, Mr. Abubakar Ahmad, the IOFS Cassava Program Consultant, conducted a pilot survey among participants during the closing session. This initiative aimed to evaluate the content of the event and gather feedback for consideration in shaping future activities conducted by IOFS.

The Regional Workshop's successful conclusion marks a significant stride in IOFS's mission to drive innovation and enhance the cassava value chain, contributing to the overall goal of sustainable food security in the OIC Member States.

IOFS Empowers Cassava Innovation in Nigeria through Second Strategic Event

Abuja, Nigeria, 28 November, 2023 – The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) marked a pivotal moment in its commitment to advancing strategic commodities for Member States of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) with its second event in Nigeria. Prof. Zulfiqar Ali , Director at the Programs and Projects Department, led the organization's delegation for the Regional Workshop Training on "Cassava Next Generation Breeding," held on 28-29 November 2023 in Abuja, Republic of Nigeria.

This in-person cassava-focused workshop follows the first successful event, the "Regional Training Workshop on Strategic Planning and Policy Development in Food Security," which took place between 21-22 December 2022 in Abuja.

The realization of this training workshop was made possible through close collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) of Nigeria, with key contributions from institutions such as the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) and the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI).

The event attracted 23 participants from Nigeria, Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, and Togo, representing national ministries of agriculture, research institutes, and academia researchers focused on the cassava sub-sector. This collaborative platform facilitated discussions on innovative solutions and challenges, aiming to enhance cassava planting materials, increase production, and boost productivity in OIC Member States, with a specific focus on West Africa.

Honourable Minister HE Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, speaking on behalf of the government of Nigeria through FMAFS, commended IOFS for its impactful initiatives in combating food insecurity and enhancing the livelihoods of cassava farmers and value chain actors. He expressed gratitude and pledged continued cooperation with IOFS to achieve food security in the West African region.

The first day of the event received substantial support from Nigeria, showcasing the host country's expertise in various segments of cassava Next Generation Breeding. International experts from the Dubai-based International Center for Biosaline Agriculture - ICBA, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Benin Republic shared their experiences, enriching West African participants with valuable insights.

Mr. Abubakar Ahmad, IOFS Cassava Program Consultant and event coordinator, played a crucial role in ensuring the workshop's positive outcome.

The Islamic Organization for Food Security Elevates Commitment to Sustainable Food Security in Nigeria

Nigeria City, 27 November, 2023 – The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) marked a significant milestone as Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, the Director of Programs and Projects, embarked on a pivotal two-day working visit to the Republic of Nigeria. The highlight of this visit was a high-level meeting with HE Honourable Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the esteemed Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of the Republic of Nigeria.

The primary agenda of this strategic encounter was to reinforce IOFS's unwavering commitment to supporting the Nigerian government in achieving sustainable food security and economic prosperity. Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali articulated the organization's strategic vision, focusing on the cassava value chain and meat exportation as key catalysts for driving socio-economic development within Nigeria and other cassava-producing nations under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) umbrella.

The meeting saw a comprehensive exploration of collaboration opportunities, spanning crucial areas such as technology integration, investment facilitation, and market access. Announcement: Next Generation Cassava Breeding Workshop/Training 🌱

As part of our commitment to enhancing food security, IOFS is thrilled to announce the "Next Generation Cassava Breeding" project. This initiative aims to modernize cassava breeding institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, employing cutting-edge tools for efficient delivery of improved cassava varieties.

Background:
Cassava, a vital staple crop for 500 million Africans, faces challenges like low productivity and poor access to improved seed. The NextGen Cassava project is part of the IOFS "Plans of Action" for strategic commodities in Organization of Islamic Cooperation ( OIC ) Member States, aligning with the OIC Plan of Action 2025.

Objectives:
- Establish a commercially viable seed value chain.
- Increase cassava yield and release new high-yielding varieties.
- Meet industrial requirements for cassava.

Project Beneficiaries:
Cassava farmers and end-users in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as cassava breeders, will benefit from improved varieties resistant to diseases.

IOFS Welcomes High Level Delegation from Pakistan at Headquarters

Astana, Kazakhstan - On 21 November 2023, the headquarters of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) welcomed a delegation of senior government officials from Pakistan as part of their visit to Astana during the 119th National Management Course (NMC) Foreign Study Tour.

During the meeting, IOFS Advisor Mr. Sofian ben Mouaddeb provided a comprehensive introduction to the organization, outlining its mission, strategy, and ongoing activities. Meanwhile, Advisor Mr. Abdula Manafi Mutualo elaborated on IOFS's special mandate for Afghanistan. Program managers Dr. Shahlo Atabaeva, Mrs. Makpal Bulatova and Mr. Talgat Kupeshev highlighted the successful collaborations with Pakistani partners, including the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and University of Agriculture, Faisalabad . They also discussed partnerships with COMSTECH - OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation in Islamabad.

The Pakistani delegation, comprised of esteemed members such as the Dean of the National School of Public Policy Sir Jamil Afaqi, Pakistan Administrative Service Member Mr. Saulat Saqib, Director Federal Investigation Agency Mr. Muhammad Jafer, Director General of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs Mr. Muhammad Amjad Aziz Qazi, Joint Secretary of the Senate at Parliament House Mr. Hyder Ali, and others, displayed keen interest in IOFS's operations. They enquired about the Organization's techniques and mechanisms for collaborating with Member States, for utilizing agricultural expertise, and determining priority areas.

Following fruitful discussions, both parties mutually agreed to establish ties, recognizing the integrated approach of the IOFS programs that spans across various sectors of the economies of Member States.

The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) is excited to share key takeaways from the insightful webinar hosted by the IOFS and it’s subsidiary International IFPA, in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University, held on November 20, 2023, focusing on "Economic Diversification for Enhanced Food Security in the GCC." The discussion, led by prominent experts, delved into critical aspects of GCC countries' commitment to economic diversification as a cornerstone of their sustainable growth plans.

The webinar aimed to spotlight opportunities, challenges, and enablers of economic diversification and its profound impact on food security within the GCC. IOFS Plays Key Role in CICA Business Forum, Unveils Strategies for Food Security

Astana, 13 November 2023 - The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) took center stage at the Sixth Plenary Session of the CICA Business Council and the Eighth CICA Business Forum, held on November 13, 2023, in Astana. The event, focused on cooperation prospects among CICA Member States in Food Security, Renewable Energy, and Green Finance, witnessed influential opening remarks by Mr. Raimbek Batalov, Chairman of the Board of CICA Business Council and Chairman of the Presidium of the Atameken National Chamber of Entrepreneurs, and Ms. Nazira Nurbayeva Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Ambassador Kairat Sarybay, CICA Secretary General, also shared significant insights on the transformation and development of CICA.

The first session, dedicated to Food Security, featured a presentation by Pavel Kondrashov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of CICA Business Council, on leveraging digital means for cooperation to ensure food security. Stanislav Chuyev from the Eurasian Development Bank followed with insights on the food security and agro-industrial potential of the Eurasian region.

Highlighting the session was a presentation by Professor Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, Director of Programs and Projects of IOFS. Prof. Zulfiqar shared analytics on the current state of food security in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation ( OIC ) region and elaborated on IOFS's strategy to address food insecurity. The presentation included specific plans for transforming Kazakhstan into a world food hub.

The collaborative efforts showcased during the CICA Business Forum underscore IOFS's commitment to fostering international partnerships and driving impactful initiatives in the realm of food security. As a pivotal contributor to the discussions, IOFS is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of global food security.
