Join Jake Oorloff and Ruhanie Perera as they present and perform from the Floating Space Archive, reflecting on the the cultural dynamics of place, context and narrative that locates the theatre making practice of Floating Space in its first ten years (2007-2017).
A conversation between its founding members Jake Oorloff and Ruhanie Perera and collaborating artists who shaped the artistic intentions of the performance work produced during this time. This sharing introduces audiences to a theatrical language, its visuality and the working principles of Floating Space Theatre Co. that traces how ‘making’ is situated in time and context, as much as it is a critical point of departure for articulating individual and collective senses of practice.
The lecture performance is presented as part of the KALĀ South Asia- a Platform for South Asian Art on Tuesday, the 6th of February 2024 at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre.

Ruhanie Perera and Jake Oorloff present a storytelling workshop as part of the KALĀ South Asia - a Platform for South Asian Art on Tuesday the 6th of February 2024 at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre.
The workshop explores narratives drawn from personal archives in the making of performance. Using the frame of monologues and/or collectively devised scenes, participants will create short performances derived from their personal archives. The core workshop content draws on approaches to storytelling that utilises visuality and movement, as well as working with objects and space that has been integral to the applied theatre and performance making practice of Floating Space.
Open to 20 participants interested in theatre making and performance.

The approaches to storytelling and performance-making builds on a 15 year practice of working with personal stories and lived history by the company and is one of the many workshop offered by FS.
(Y)our Story happens this week at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Sri Lanka( MMCA).
Through a series of exercises, participants will be exposed to methods of viewing events and experiences from their own lives and finding inspiration for stories that can be shared with others. Participants will also learn how to receive stories that are different to our own experiences and the politics of personal narratives and counter-hegemonic narratives.
The workshop conducted by Jake Oorloff will be based on Floating Space Theatre Company’s approaches to storytelling and performance-making practice developed over a period of 15 years in their work with communities of children and adults both in Sri Lanka and India.

FS has been somewhat busy even through this particularly difficult time. in have had a particularly difficult few years of covid and now the present crisis. FS as part of our commitment to supporting artists and collaborating with other institutions and artists are pleased to have been able to work with to present the Table Top Stories for the second time. Five artists were provided with bursaries and had the opportunity to work directly with forced entertainment over a four week period developing and table top performances. The closed call engaged and ***r artists from different artistic disciplines including theatre, animation, classical dance, and storytelling. In addition to this three artists from last year’s workshop were mentored on their ongoing performance work.

The Sri Lankan iteration of Ahilan Ratnamohan’s ongoing performative series, The Foreigner, uses atypical performative and interactive methods to respond to the specific linguistic and cultural fabric in the country through a series of language-based games. Audiences are invited to come and play specific games with learners of Sinhala who have no conventional performance training, and question their own assumptions related to the role of proficient language use in communication.’
