WhatsApp has introduced a new screen sharing feature to enhance its video-calling experience, putting it in direct competition with established video conferencing apps like Microsoft Meet, Google Meet, Zoom, and Apple's FaceTime.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the feature via a Facebook post and Instagram, highlighting that it allows users to share documents, photos, and even shopping carts with contacts during video calls.
Initially tested with beta users on Android in late May, screen sharing on WhatsApp can be accessed by tapping the "Share" icon. Users can choose to share a specific app or their entire screen, similar to other video conferencing platforms.
WhatsApp is gradually rolling out the screen-sharing feature on Android, iOS, and Windows Desktop in phases. This means that while not everyone will have access immediately, it will become available to more users soon.
In addition to screen sharing, WhatsApp has introduced landscape mode for video calls, enhancing the viewing experience. This mode may be particularly useful when utilizing screen sharing.
While WhatsApp has offered video calling for more than six years, it continues to improve its services to remain competitive. Recently, it introduced picture-in-picture support for video calls on iOS and the ability to share short video messages in chats, recognizing the significance of video as a communication tool.
Screen sharing has become a vital aspect of video conferencing apps, even for consumer-focused ones. In 2021, Apple introduced SharePlay for FaceTime, enabling iOS users to natively share their screens. WhatsApp's expansion of this feature to Android, iOS, and desktop users marks a significant step forward.
