Underground Utility Tracing
A very important, yet challenging job.
But when you in good hands, no worries..!

Having good quality equipment is a must, but that's only a one requirement,
There are many more..,
Knowledge, experience, knowhow of the different features & functions coming with the equipment, identification of the correct technology to be adapted, etc.
You need to put all of them together and blend it suit to the local situation, to see the happy end.

The below pics are from 'pipeline tracing job' we carried out during last week, at Bandarawela - Sri Lanka.
The customer was struggling to locate their pipeline which have been laid more than 35 years ago. The road section has been changed, the environment has been changed, the available records are not so helpful.
After trying out different methods to locate the pipeline over several months, but with no good-results wasting out their time and resources.., the customer reached DETECT to carry out the job for them.

Needless to say, our customers are always happy 😊

The situation was bit challenging, bad weather conditions; rainy days with land-slide warnings; sub-surface is saturated with water in some areas; heavy traffic flow even during night, but none of them are real problems when you have DETECT with you.

DETECT was happy to be participate as the Resource Person for the training programme conducted Dhaka Water & Sanitation Authority (D-WASA) organized by G2G TECH Limited, in line with the supplying of DMA Management Equipment.

The training programme was carried out under three topics,
1. Underground Utility Tracing & Location
2. Leak Detection & Leak Location in Water Supply Networks
3. Flow Metering in Water Supply Schemes
including classroom type training programmes and field demonstrations.

Hope the D-WASA and all the participants were able to learn something valuable for their career development and regular daily O&M works, from this 3-day comprehensive training programme held at Dhaka, Bangladesh during 18th, 19th 20th July 2023.

Tracing of HDPE Pipeline (DN800) with an average Depth of 5m

At the shoreline (this is a sea water intake of a power plant)
The pipeline is under the Water Table
So the GPR method did not support,
The Electromagnetic method was the only option.

Thanks to the divers, the flexible probe could be inserted into the pipeline, and then traced over the ground.
with 5m depth, yes quite challenging due to the environmental conditions...

LEAK LOCATION by Gas Tracing..,
for Water Pipelines where Hydrostatic Pressure Test fails...

Case Study
Pipeline: DN400; Ductile Iron
Section: 500 meters
Location: Matale, Sri Lanka
Terrain: Nearly Flat

The Hydrostatic Pressure Test fails in this particular section because of a leakage, therefore the pipelaying contractor cannot handover the pipeline section to Water Utility.
Hydrostatic Test Pressure is 14bar.
The initial trial of leak location by Acoustic Method has not been successful.

The customer (Pipe Laying Contractor), requested DETECT to proceed with leak location works.

With the information provided by the customer reveals that the Pressure Drop rate is very low. However, they have no idea about the leak-flow rate.

It was decided to carry out Leak Location work by 'Gas Tracing', and when the line is pressurized with 'Gas', it was observed that the pressure drop rate is significantly small...

The pressure drop curve is almost FLAT, and the drop can be seen only in the zoomed view.

This particular leak location work was very challenging and it took more than 5-days to locate it.

Ultimately we found that...!
