Its premiere at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall on August 18, 2008, attracted a diverse crowd, setting the stage for a grand debut. The creative direction and choreography, along with the music composition by Thanuja Priyanthi Bandula, and the libretto by Gaya Ramya Alwis, have been widely praised by local and international critics, solidifying its place in Sri Lankan performing arts history.

Dancing is a form of expression that has been around for centuries. It is a way for individuals to convey emotions and tell stories through movement. Professional dancers must have excellent technique, flexibility, and stamina to perform complex routines and often work in a variety of settings, including on stage.
Lasni Subasinghe is a distinguished figure in the arts, known for her roles as a dancer, theatre actress, choreographer, instructor, costume designer, and vocalist. Her pioneering journey began with her lead role in the groundbreaking ballet opera ‘Patavi,’ directed by the late Mrs. Thanuja Bandula. She made history as Sri Lanka’s first ballerina in Pointe Shoes to perform a full-length ballet of one and a half hours.
‘Patavi’ saw significant success with twelve performances in Colombo and Kandy, attracting diverse audiences. Lasni’s talents as a dancer, actress, and choreographer were highlighted in this production, alongside her roles throughout her school and professional career.
Since 2010, Lasni has shared her expertise in ballet with students at the Ranara Academy and the Russian School of Ballet at the Russian Culture Centre in Colombo, where she has taught since 2013. Her work includes choreography and costume design for ‘Ravana, the Legend Untold,’ a major stage production by a Sri Lankan University, performed at the Nelum Pokuna, Mahinda Rajapakse Theatre in 2018 and 2019 to sold-out audiences.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Lasni holds a degree in social sciences from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, and a diploma in Psychology and Counselling from Pearson. She has also worked as a Human Resource Professional in a Sri Lankan conglomerate.
Lasni received formal training at the Ranara Academy under Mrs. Thanuja Bandula and completed Ballet Evaluations at the Russian School of Ballet and Dancing, earning accolades for her skills as a dancer and instructor. Currently in Canada, she continues her development at the Royal Academy of Dance and teaches at Canada’s National Ballet School.
She has also trained her voice from childhood under Mrs. Thanuja Bandula, gaining extensive experience in operatic and folk music productions. Currently, she trains with Canadian Opera Singer Dr. Chelsea Melamed Cushman and has worked on opera creations with Professor Darry Edwards at COSA Canada.
