Oblate Province of Colombo

Four brothers, from the Colombo Province in the Congregation of Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, made their perpetual profession of Evangelical Counsels on December 14, 2023, at the Oblate Scholasticate, Ampitiya, Kandy, Sri Lanka. They are Revd. Bros. Praneeth Udara, OMI; Mark Sanjaya, OMI; Dan Remesiyes, OMI; and Charith Jayangana, OMI. The Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Very Revd. Fr. Roshan J. L. Silva, OMI, the Provincial Superior of the Oblate Province of Colombo, together with Very Revd. Fr. James Jayasinghe, OMI, the Vicar Provincial, and Revd. Fr. Andrias Fernando, OMI, the Superior of the Oblate Scholasticate. Witnessing the occasion were several Oblates, family members, and current and former formators of the professed. We hope and pray for God's abundant blessings for these brothers as they go forth.

We inform you with great regret that REVD FR. ANTON FELICIAN FERDINANDO, OMI, who was 79 years old, passed away on November 13, 2023. At the time of his death, he was living in retirement at Marian Grove, Kohuwala.

Reverend Father Anton Felician Ferdinando, a Catholic Religious Priest of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, was born on 11th July 1944, in Moratuwa, Rawathawatta. He was the son of Leslie V. S. Ferdinando and N. Magarette Ferdinando. Father Ferdinando commenced his educational journey at St. Mary’s School, Rawatawaththa and St. Sebastian’s College in Moratuwa, where he laid the foundation for his future vocation in the service of God.�In his pursuit of religious life, he joined the Novitiate in Mont Eden, Kalutara. On the 15th of October 1969, at Kalutara, Father Ferdinando made his First Oblation. Eight years later, on the 15th of July 1977 he made his Perpetual Oblation. On the 12th of September 1977, in Kadalana, Moratuwa, Father Ferdinando was ordained a priest by the Late Most Revd. Dr. Oswald Gomis.

Throughout his remarkable 54 years of religious life and 46 years of priestly service, Father Ferdinando dedicated himself to numerous parishes and communities. As a Parish Priest, he ministered in Kadalana (1978), Waga (1981-1984), Avissawella (1984-1989), Kalamulla (1989-1992), and Nittambuwa (1992-1993). Additionally, Father Ferdinando fulfilled the role of Assistant Parish Priest in Tarala (1977), Ragama (1978-1981), and Kochchikade, Colombo 13 (2008). Father Ferdinando’s service extended beyond Sri Lanka as well. He served as a Co-Pastor at St. Joseph’s Church in Middle Town, New York, USA (1994-1995) and as a missionary in Lacombe, Canada (2006-2007). He also dedicated his chaplaincy skills at Maris Stella College in Negombo (1996-2000), St. Poor Clair’s Convent in Ragama (2007-2008), and Diyagala Boys’ Town in Wattala (2010-2020).

The Oblates of the Province of Colombo mourn Father Ferdinando’s demise with great grief and sadness. His strong faith, caring heart, and unselfish commitment to God and mankind will be treasured and remembered by all those whose lives he touched.

1944 ජූලි 11 වැනි දින මොරටුව, රාවතාවත්ත ප්‍රදේශයේ දී උපත ලැබු ඇන්ටන් ෆිලිෂියන් ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩෝ පියතුමා ලෙස්ලි වී එස් ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩෝ මහතාගේ සහ එන් මාගරට් ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩෝ මහත්මියගේ පුත්‍රයා විය. ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩු පියතුමා රාවතාවත්ත ශාන්ත මරියා විද්‍යාලයෙන් සහ මොරටුව ශාන්ත සෙබස්තියන් විද්‍යාලයෙන් අධ්‍යාපනික ගමන ආරම්භ කළ අතර දෙවිදුන්ගේ සේවයට ලද කැදවීමට ප්‍රතිචාර දක්වමින් 1965 ජනවාරි 5 වන දින කොහුවල කනිටු දෙව්සත්හලට ඇතළත් විය. 1969 ඔක්‌තෝබර් 15 වැනිදා කළුතර මොන්ට් ඊඩන් හි දී ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩු පියතුමා සිය ප්‍රථම පූජාව වේදභාර ලබාගත් අතර වසර අටකට පසු, 1977 ජූලි 15 වන දින ඔහු සිය සදාකාලික වේදභාර ලබා ගත්තේ ය. මෙතුමා 1977 සැප්තැම්බර් මස 12 වැනි දින මොරටුව කඩලාන සාන්ත අන්තෝනි දෙව් මැදුරේ දී ස්වරගස්ත වූ අති උතුම් දේවධර්මාචාර්ය ඔස්වල්ඩ් ගෝමිස් රදගුරු හිමිපාණන් අතින් පූජකවර අභිසෙස් ලැබී ය.

ඇන්ටන් ෆිලිෂියන් ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩෝ පියතුමා වසර 54 ක පැවිදි ජීවිතය හා වසර 46 ක පූජක සේවාව පුරාවටම, බොහෝ දේවස්ථාන සහ කිතුනු සංඝයන් වෙනුවෙන් කැපවී සේවය කළේය. මීසම් සේවක පියතුමෙක් ලෙස, ඔහු කඩලාන (1978), වග (1981-1984), අවිස්සාවේල්ල (1984-1989), කලමුල්ල (1989-1992), සහ නිට්ටඹුව (1992-1993) යන ප්‍රදේශවල සේවය කළේය. මීට අමතරව, තාරාල (1977), රාගම (1978-1981), සහ කොළඹ 13, කොච්චිකඩේ (2008) යන ප්‍රදේශවල සහායක මීසම් සේවක පියතුමෙක් ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩෝ පියතුමා සේවය කරන ලදී. ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩෝ පියතුමාගේ සේවය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙන් ඔබ්බට ද විහිදිනි. ඔහු ඇමරිකා එක්සත් ජනපදයේ නිව් යෝර්ක්හි මිඩ්ල් ටවුන් හි ශාන්ත ජෝසප් දේවස්ථානයේ සම දේවගැතිවරයෙකු ලෙස (1994-1995) සහ කැනඩාවේ ලැකොම්බේ (2006-2007) හි මිෂනාරිවරයෙකු ලෙස සේවය කළේය. එසේම මීගමුවේ මාරිස්ටෙලා විද්‍යාලය (1996-2000), රාගම ශාන්ත දිළිදු ක්ලෙයාර් කන්‍යාරාමය (2007-2008), දියගල බෝයිස් ටවුන් (2010-2020) යන ස්ථානවල ද උපාධ්‍ය පියතුමෙක් ලෙස සේවය කළේය.
ඇන්ටන් ෆිලිෂියන් ෆර්ඩිනැන්ඩෝ පියතුමාගේ අභාවය පිළිබඳව නිර්මල මරිය නිකායේ කොළඹ ප්‍රාදේශිකයේ සියලුම පියතුමන්ලා සහ සහෝදරතුමන්ලා ඉතා සංවේගයට පත්වන අතර එතුමන්ගේ ආත්මයට නිත්‍ය සන්තර්පණය අතවන ලෙස සැදැහැවත් ජනතාව හා එතුමන්ගේ පවුලේ සියලු දෙනා සමග ඔවුන් දෙවිදුන් යදින්නෝ ය. ඔහුගේ ශක්තිමත් ඇදහිල්ල, සංවේදි හදවත සහ දෙවියන් වහන්සේ හා මනුෂ්‍ය වර්ගයා කෙරෙහි වූ පරාර්ථකාමී කැපවීම ඔහු ස්පර්ශ කළ සියලු හදවත් හි නිධන්ව නිරන්තරයෙන් සිහිපත් කෙරෙනු ඇත.

INAUGURATING PROVINCIAL SUPERIOR & HIS COUNCILLORS - 2023 - OBLATE PROVINCE OF COLOMBO

On October 16, 2023, at De Mazenod House, Colombo 15, the members of the Province of Colombo of the Congregation of the Missionary oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) assembled to witness the new team of provincial administration begin its next three-year tenure (2023-2026).

Very Reverend Fr. Roshan J. L. SILVA, OMI took office as the Provincial Superior of the Oblate Province of Colombo during the solemn Eucharistic Celebration. He will be assisted in this service by Revd Fr. Philip Anselm Jagath ANTHONY, OMI; Revd Fr. James JAYASINGHE, OMI; Revd Fr. Anton Shivantha WAAS, OMI; Revd Fr. Chrishantha Jayalath FERNANDO, OMI, and, Revd Fr. Eymard DALPATADU, OMI, as the members of his Council.

The Provincial superior animates and directs the Province to further the apostolate and the best interests of the members. The Provincial’s responsibilities embrace both the specific mission of the Congregation within the Province and the religious apostolic life of its communities and members. In writing to Provincials, Bishop Eugene de Mazenod, the Founder of the Congregation, always insisted on the triple nature of their duties: as administrators of the Province, as pastors of their men, and as fathers of the family.

Congratulating these Reverend Fathers, the Oblate Province of Colombo joins with the people of God, to whom they provide their services, in praying that they would faithfully and uprightly carry out the roles of leadership and animation that they have assumed.

50 Years of Excellence - Jubilee Celebration at Sidupiyanila, Sacred Heart Oblate Novitiate

We regret to inform you that REVD FR. OSWALD BERNARD FIRTH, OMI who was 81 years old, passed away this morning, June 19, 2023, while he was living in retirement at Marian Grove, Kohuwala. During his 62 years of religious life and 58 years of priestly life he has served as a Lecturer at the Philosophate, National Seminary of Our Lady of Lanka, Ampitiya, the Director, SETIC, Kandy (1985 - 1990), the Director, SEDEC, Colombo (1990 - 1995) and the Director, CSR-Center for Society and Religion, Colombo-10 (1996 - 2002). He was also the Assistant General for Missions at the General Administration, Rome (2002 - 2010). Fr. Firth Has also served as a Pastor in Australia from 2011 to 2020.

Don George Warnakulasuriya, OMI who was 90 years old and the Eldest of the Oblate Province of Colombo, passed away this morning*, May 16, 2023, while he was living his eve of life at Marian Grove, Kohuwala. During his *58 years of priestly life*, he has served in the parishes of *Grand Street, Negombo, Wellawaththa, Mutuwal, Halpe and Katunayeka in the Archdiocese* and in *Manalthivu, Kalpitiya, Chilaw and Kattakaduwa in the diocese of Chilaw*.

Funeral Arrangements of the Late Revd Fr. Don George Warnakulasuriya, OMI is as follows:

His mortal remains will be brought to De Mazenod House, Colombo 15, today (16 May) at 5.00 pm and laid to rest there until tomorrow, 17 May, 2023, in the late afternoon. It will then be brought to *the Church of Our Lady of Fatima, Colombo 10*, at 1:30 p.m. *The funeral service will start at 3.00 p.m. tomorrow, 17 May 2023*, followed by the burial at General Cemetery in Borella. Please do pray for the repose of his soul that God may welcome Fr. Don George to His eternal bliss. ✝️

Today, Monday, August 22, 2022, four brothers, Asala Cooray, Kavindu Shanaka, Nirod Niluksha (from Colombo Province), and Dishon Assisian (from Jaffna Province), proclaimed the Evangelical Counsels for the first time. Let us pray that they will be empowered at every step of the way so that they will always be faithful to their profession.
