More Smiles in Mahiyanganaya – RI Generous Hearts Initiative

The moon was glowing as brilliant as the goodwill in our hearts. Twenty-five members from Royal Institute International School, Nugegoda and Girls’ School left Colombo for another grand giveaway of hundreds of school packs to economically-deprived students from Mahiyanganaya.

The first stop was Dikyaya Vidyalaya, Arawa - a little school with minimal facilities and hardly a hundred students; the lack of amenities was quite shocking. Nonetheless, our joy, at their performances and feast full of glee and gratitude, was heartfelt. In return for the donation of school bags - complete with books, uniform material, stationery and DSI vouchers — by the RI Generous Hearts project through the Foundation of Goodness, we were left with loads of satisfaction.

Our second destination was Yalawela Maha Vidyalaya, where 369 bags were donated to the students. We were thanked profusely through speeches, a feast, and the beautiful performance by a prodigy songstress there.

Gurukumbura Junior, located in the famous vedda village, Dambana was our final destination for the day. We were amazed by how well the indigenous people had adapted to the new world. They treated us with much indebtedness, and we were delighted to meet the very special ‘Dambane Gunawardana’, a highly-qualified, excellently educated, inspiration among the indigenous people. He presently serves as the Vice Principal of the school. Meeting such an accomplished individual was quite a treat!

The ordeal was a tad taxing, but the excitement and joy on the beneficiaries’ faces would be a lasting sight to relish.

The year 2021 was truly one of generosity as Royal Institute International School worked tirelessly towards collecting donations for the aptly named RI Generous Hearts foundation. The Maharagama branch was no exception, raising funds for 395 school packs, which were distributed to the well-deserving children of estate schools located in Hatton.

The new year was begun in a truly beautiful manner as this heart-warming occasion took place on the 20th January 2022. The Maharagama team, which included the Principal, Mrs. Samila Jayaratne, teachers and prefects, accompanied the Foundation of Goodness during this distribution of school packs.

The first school to be visited was Darawala Lower Division Tamil School, where 107 smiling students were each given a school pack that would empower their education throughout the academic year. In similar fashion, and with just as much joy, 85 students of Potro Tami Vidyalayam, Norwood, were the next to receive their very own school packs, and the already fruitful day concluded with a final distribution to 203 students of Eltops Tamil Vidyalaya, Bodagawanthalawa.

To witness the pure happiness on the faces of the little children, was the sweetest of rewards for all involved, and as a whole, this wonderful event was a true testament of everything Royal Institute stands for in its pursuit of enriching the lives of the youth of our nation.

RI Generous Hearts: The Smiles Said it All!

“Show kindness and love to the ones who deserve it”, a saying by Shreya M., could not be a better example to elucidate the significance of showing love and empathy towards all citizens and especially, less fortunate.

Keeping this in mind, a group of prefects along with three teachers from RI Gampaha set off to Kandy on the 19th of January to distribute 147 packs of essential school supplies to needy children as a continuation of the distribution journey of RI Generous Hearts.

We distributed packs to Sri Shiwashakthi Tamil Vidyalaya and the Upper Galaha Tamil Vidyalaya. The warm and friendly welcome we received with exhilarating smiles and cheers of the sweet souls made our journey worthwhile.

One of the students shared, “As a student, this program not only enabled me to realize the hardships these innocent souls experience on daily basis but comprehend how grateful we ought to be for everything life has bestowed upon us.”
